END PANEL FOR OPEN-CAR SEATS AND THE SEAT-POST WITH WHICH 1T CONNECTS.
hPECTFICAJlIiON forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,517, dated Eeptember 23, 1902.
Application filed April 24:, 1902.
To all 7071/0112, 7 III/H l] (OH/(5677b:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SEEBERGEinoi i he city of \Vatervliet, county of Albany, and ,State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the End Panels of OpenOar Seats an d the Seatdfhsts with which they Connect, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of the metal panels and the end posts of open-car seats, by which improveinent the most prominent points of connection between the wood and metal will be hid from View and the unsightly appearance caused by the separating or spreading apart of the wood and metal where connected be avoided.
My improvements also relate to the construction of the end posts of the seats in such a manner that the cnrtain-grooves formed therein shall extend downwardly below the floor of the car instead of stopping thereat, whereby the entrance of rain driven by the wind will not enter the car between the curtain-bottom and the car-floor.
Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are two plates of drawings containing six figures illustrating the application of my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure 1 is a front end elevation of the panel end of a car-seat with part of one of the panel parts, as well as the upper end of one of the seat-posts, broken off for convenience in illustration. Fig. 2 is a side edge view of the parts shown at Fig. 1, illustrating also a part of the car-sill in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line :0 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a side view of the seatpost, showing the groove upon that side 01 the post for the insertion of the tonguing edge of one of the panel parts and illustrating a part of the car-sill in section and showing the curtain-groove upon that side of the post fronting the view. Fig. 5 is a front view of one of the panel parts, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the panel part shown at Fig. 5.
The several parts of the apparatus thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference,
Serial No. 104,444. (No inodelf! and the function of: the parts is described as follows:
The letter Pdesignaies the end panel, made of metal and as Formed by the two panel parts 17 19 The letters I) designate one of the seatposts, each of which has produced in each of its opposite side faces the curtain-groove G, shown as extended downwardly below the carfioor, so that the post part in which the curtain-groove is formed will lap past the outer face of the sill S, and on the inside lower end the post D is mortised into the sill at M.
The letters (Z designate a groove made in each of the opposite sides of the posts D.
The letters 19" designate the tonguing inner edges formed on each of the panel parts 1.1 with each of the latter arranged to enter edgewisc one of the grooves (IF, with the vertical edge of each oi the panel parts above the tonguing part 19 arranged to abut at p" on the post sides and the bottom to rest in the bottom of the groove at p The letters F designate ears projected inwardly on lower edge of the panel pars for connection by the use of screws inserted in the ears to enter the car-floor l.
The letters E designate ears that are arranged to project from each of the panel parts at right angles thereto and where they will be vertically in line with the edges of the grooves d when the tonguing edges of the panel parts are entered therein and also vertically in line with the edge of the panel part1) where above and the vertical edge m where below the ton guing part. As thus placed these cars connect one of the panel parts 19 to the seat-post D at each side of the latter to retain them in their tonguing position. As thus made and arranged to connect, the union between the wood and metal at such points as become unsightly is entirely avoided.
No claim is made herein for theconstruction of the curtain-groove apart from its combination with the improved construction of seat-posts by which this improved adaptation is made available.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. The combination with the seat-posts of an open car each having a groove vertically formed therein at each of its opposite sides, of a metal panel formed in two vertically-divided parts, each provided with a tonguing part on its inner vertical edge, and each adapted to have its tonguing edge part inserted in one of said grooves in the seat-post, and outside its entered tonguing part to be secured to the post substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with the seat-posts of an open car each made to extend downwardly below, and outside of the car-sill into which it is mortised, and provided with a curtaingroove arranged in each side thereof to extend downwardly below the car-floor, and. having another groove in each of its opposite sides; of a metal panel vertically divided in two panel parts each of which latter is constructed with a tonguing inner edge; and each of which is adapted to be inserted in one of the last-named grooves, and be thereat secured to the post substantially as, and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at the city of Troy, this 17th day of March, 1902, in the presence of the two witnesses whose names are hereto written.
JOHN SEEBERGER.
