Description

NITED STATES ATENT Orrrcno JAMES KEE AND JOHN ASLOAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED ASH-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,172, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JAMES KEE and JOHN SLOAN, of the cit-y and county of PhiladelphiaJ and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Improvement in` Garbage-Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the na ture, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in Whichl Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 2 is a plan or top view, with the lid ofthe box open.
The same letters refer to like parts in the different figures.
Our invention consists of an iron box, suitably constructed, provided with interior removable trays and with a lid, which aifords a raised step at the curb of the pavement for mounting or alightin fr.
To enable one skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to construct and use the same, we Will proceed to describe it in detail.
A represents the pavementyand B the curbstone, abuttingon G, the pavement of the street. The garbage-box, which is sunk into the pavement, consists of an upper cast-iron portion, D, and a lower sheet-iron portion, E, secured to D by rivets, though the whole box may be cast in one piece if desired. It has a lid, F, which is hinged and provided with a segment guide or guides, Gr, which answer a double purpose-First, in givin g support to thelid and preventing it from being thrown back too far to the injury of the hinge; and, secondly, in connection with the. spring H, in preventing the lid from being closed with such violence as to fracture itself or the box.
The interior of the box may be occupied by one or more removable trays I, and the segment-guide Gr plays inthe space between the said trays, or, in case there is but one of the latter, then the guides G occupy spaces at each end, between the end of the tray and the sides ofthe box. As the lid descends, the guide Gr, coming in contact with the spring, is resisted thereby, so as to prevent too forcible closure, and a projection on the end of the guide coining in contact with a flange on the box restrains the lid from too great backward deflection. The lid and box, respectively, are provided, the former with a handle and catch, and the latter with a spring-holder, K, and releasing-stud, J, for freeing the catch of the lid. When closed the lid forms a raised step for alighting or dismounting from carriage or horseback or for remounting, and the trays aiford a receptacle for garbage, ashes, or other refuse which are to be exposed for the garbage-gatherers who perainbulate the streets yof the city. The box may be set into a castiron pavement by providing the upper portion with a ange, which rests upon the pavenient.
'lhe projection M, on the back of the box, admits the end of the segment-guide G,which is secured to the lid in any suitable manner.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The raised cast-iron ash or garbage box provided with interior receptacles, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the lid F, segment G, and spring H, operating as and for the purpose described.
To the above specification of our improve ment in iron ash-boxes we have, this 18th day of July, 1865, set our signatures.
JAMES KEE. JOHN SLOAN.
