Specification of Letters Patent.
llaten'ted Aug. 2%, 1%12.
Applieati filed Qetober 7, 1911. Serial No. 653,368.
To ZZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, JOHN H. Lirmgn, of i aterhury, New Haven county, R'onicn'r 'llLToK. BABIN, of Oakville, Litchfield county,
a and Jonas MISEREZ; of Waterville, New
Haven emintqy in the sea-e of Cohnecticut,
citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheath/total, Boxes, of which the following is specil' nation I Gill ini'ei'ition relates to a new and useful oral of sheetmetal box adapted to be used for holding various commodities such -oe polieln salve ancl other preparations. It is the purpose of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive form of s ioet Ell) metal lion the cover of whichtwill he auto niatieally caught and'lo'eked, when closed,
and. which cover will likewise be thrown open automatically when released; to pro- "t ldo a construction of box hinge, and cover will ('losely inolose the box when the cover'is shut down and in sash a way that it will readily spring or fly open when roleaseol.
il ith these and other objects in view the invention resides and Consists in the construetion and novel combination and arrangzenient of parts hereinafter fully d0- 36 scribed, illustrated in the areonipanying ilrai'vings, and pointed out in the rlaiins hereto appended, it. being understood that Various ehangosmin the form, proportimi. size and minor details of uonstrurtion within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrilioing any oi theadvanta i-s oifthe inof rol'oreiu'o donoto parts throughout tho i Figure 1 snows a top plan Vlow of our improved "form of sheet metal box, in a rd position. Fig is a 't'urthor plan and, Fi 5, shows a central vertical longitudinal section through a modified form of box.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings (3 represents the box which as before stated is formed of sheet metal. This box is cylindrical in form and inrludes a bottom '7 that why be formed integral with the sides aS' shown. The top ed e oi the oylindriral side is turned out at a right an 'le to form an annular lodge 8 and is then rolled over and in to form an annular rib t) that surrounds the. said ledge. v
The cowr 1t) stamped up from one l'pleco of sheet metal to 'torin a round and slightly domed top having; an outwardly dispostal annular flange 11. The rear edge of this (tango is extended to forni a hinge llltlllber 12 that is passed through a slot 13 in the lt(lf and is 'rollod in and around a portion of the rib t in a way to allow the said cover to swing: upon and shut. in practiro the annular tlan ir of the rover tits down tight upon the lodge o'l' tho box so as to tightly close the same upon all sides. The forward odgn ol' tho llangr of tho rover inrludos an oxtriulod lug ii that engages and snaps in lllltltl the rib oi' the box to lock the (rover down in plat-0 when tla same is pressed shut. 'lho pinl'lo ol' tho hinge 12 is arranged. slightly below tho surfaceol' the ledge 8 of tla= box so as to slightly spring the metal oi lllt hing'o of tho rover and cause the rover to snugly engage the said lodge when closed, and to rlosc against the resistance of such spring nu-tal. This irondition insures the cover springing open ininmliately upon being released. "lho sides of the box are more or loss .'irllal lo. and the: front portion thereturo norrssarily yields or springs out slightly to lot the in 14 pass under the rib' as shown in Fig. l. "he box may thus read ly be opened by releasing' the said lug whirl; is :u't-oniplishml by slightly pressing the two sides oi the box in, between the thumb and li:retinger in' the manner indi oatcd in 2. This obviously tends to spring the box into an oral or elongated shape, as representesl in l ig. 2, and thus release the cover which immediately springs open.
1g. 5, We have shown a slightly modiform of box and wherein the hinge l1 made separate and secured to tho-ho and eoYet'. the top edge of box int-hiding ledge S and rib 9" i disposed inwardly inateatl ot tlt\\'ttt(ll The lug "l l of the (ZOYOt i1: rolled down and inward to yielda ly engage the edge of the rib The purpose and operation of the box i.-- in all other respeetx I the same that sh wn in the other figures.
Haring thus tlest'ribed our invention what i we elaini and desire to seeure by Letters iatent is:
1. A evlindrieal sheet metal box inning its top edge portion rolled to form a ii. i for the engagement of the rover. sn 1 box being flexible and its sidee adapted to be sprung in to elongate the bod of box from front to rear to disengage the rover. a sheet metal eovel. hinged to the top ot box and adapted to elose within the ri and having a flange to tightl engage and elose the top edge of box and an extended lip ttpon the. edge of the. eorer to engage the inner underl t t t i edge ot the rib when the eoxer is elosed and V *hp upon the edge ot the eover to engage the the box is in a normal position.
2. A e \lindrieal eheet metal box having? it top edge portion flared ottt and rolled to t'orni a ledge upon whirh the eover (loses and means for the engagement of the rover. said box being liexibl and its sides adapted to be sprung in to elongate the body of the box tront l'ront to rear to disengage the t'ttttt. a aheet metal eorer hinged to the box and having a llange to tightl engage the ledge and to engage the engaging means ot the box when the. eover is closed and the box is in a normal position.
3. e \*lindrieal sheet metal box having its top edge portion flared out to form a ledge ttpon which the eover (loses and rolied in to form a rib for the engagement of the cover said box being flexible and its sides adapted to be sprung in to elongate the body of box from front torear to disengage the cover. a sheet metal eover hinged to the roll of the top edge and having an annular flange to tightly engage the ledge and an extended lip upon the forward edge of the cover to engage the inner edge of the rib when the cover is elosed and the box is in a normal position.
i. resilient box having its top edge portion rolled up to .torn'i a rib for the engagement ot the rover. ai l box being flexible and its: sides adapted to be sprung in to elongate the bod ot the ox to t'lisengage the eover. a eorer pi\'otall attn(.i1(l to the top of the box and adapted to close within the rib. and an extended lip upon the edge l t the cover to engage the inner under edge oi? the rib when the cover is closed and the box is in a normal position.
5. A re. ili0nt box having its top edge portion rolled up to form a rib for the engagement ot' the voter. said box having its sides adapted to be sprung in to elottgate the bod) of the box to disengage the rover,
a CUHI pirotally eonneeted to the top of the xbox and adapted to elese wulun the rib, and
having a tlange to tightly engage and close the top edge of the box. and an extended inner under edge of the rib when the eover is t'ltiHttl and the box 13 in a normal pUHtlUIL ('i. i\ resilient box having its top edge portion rolled up to form a rib for the engagement ol' the eo\er. said box being tlexible and its sides adapted to be sprung in to elongate the body of the box to diheugage the rover. a rover engageable with the box and adapted to (l nt within the rib and tightly engage and eloee the top edge of the box. and an extended lip upon the edge of the rover to engage the under edge of the rib when the rover is elosed and the box is in a normal position.
