Description
2 Sheets-Sheet 2.
G. G. RICHMOND.
Garbage-Sink.
Patented April 8,1879.
UNITED STATES GEORGE G. RICHMOND, OF PEEKSKILL, ASSIGNOR TO MOSES SAMELSON, OF
PATENT OEEIOE.v
NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARBAGE-SINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,006, dated April 8, 1879; application filed November 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. RICHMOND, of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ash and Garbage Vaults; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, in which- Figures l and 2 represent sectional views of a device embodying my invention in a closed and opened position of the operative parts, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section through the axis of pulleys c.
In order that others may understand and usc my invention, I will lirst proceed to describe the same, and, subsequently, to point out in the claims the novel feature thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a covered vault for ashes and garbage, to be placed below the level of the street or sidewalk, so that no obstruction is offered to vehicles or pedestrians, and the deposit and removal of the refuse material readily eit'ected.
In the drawings, A represents a vault, preferably made of cast-iron, and provided with a hinged cover, B. The vault shown is constructed to contain a single bucket, C; but a vault composed of two or more compartments to contain a number of buckets may be used. A laterally-projectin g flange, a, is provided at the top of the vault to rest upon the pavement, and to which the cover B is hinged. The sides of thevault are recessed, as shown at a a', within which the mechanism for elevating and lowering the bucket containing the refuse material is partially arranged.
The coverB is constructed with one or more openings, D, arranged, when the cover is closed, directly above the bucket. These open in gs are provided with doors d and surrounded with internal depending 'an ges, d of sufficient depth to prevent the escape of the materials into the vault in filling the buckets.
E represents a support for the bucket, and
arranged to slide vertically in guideways c e, as shown. Friction-rollers or other known devices may be applied in such guideways to reduce friction, if deemed necessary.
The buckets are elevated by the opening movement of the coverB, by means of the cord or chain b, connected to the cover and bucket-support E, and passing around the intermediate pulleys c' c', arranged within the recesses a a', as shown, the return or descending movement of the bucket and cover being eected by their own weight.
A spring, F, may be applied between the vault and the cover B, to act to assist the opening movement of the cover, and to prevent injury to the same when suddenly closed.
The covers B d may be supplied with any suitable catches or fastenings and appropriate hinges, and the upper surface corrugated or roughened similar to iron pavements.
I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate a vault with more than one compartment; but a vault may be constructed with several compartments, to contain an equal number of buckets and the necessary attachments for their joint or independent operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An ash and garbage vault adapted to contain one or more removable buckets, and provided with a hinged cover and mechanism for elevating said buckets therein, connected with the hinged cover, so'that the opening movement of the latter will raise the bucket, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the bucket-support
