BOTTOM-DUMPING BUCKET.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs L. STUEB- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Bottom-Dumping Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottom dumping buckets, and is exemplified in the accompanying drawings in a cylindrical bucket.
The object of the invention is the production of a bottoni dumping bucket of few parts of the simplest construction, with a locking device automatic in its operation, and means to maintain the locking device in a locked position.
The invention is further characterized by having a swinging bottom pivoted on trunnions extending from the sides of the body of the bucket, between the front and rear portions thereof, and the rear lower edge of the said body curved up, to allow the bottom to swing on said trunnions when closing or opening the bucket.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bucket with its vbottom in a lowered position, and the 'invention incorporated therewith, Fig. 2 shows a partial axial section of the invention, as on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 5, Fig. 3 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1 with the bottom of the bucket in its locked position, Fig. 4 shows a partial enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 4, 4, Fig. 5 represents a top plan view of Fig. 3, Fig. 6 shows a rear view of the invention and Fig. 7 is a front view thereof.
The body of the bucket is shown to consist of the cylindrical shell 20, with the upper reinforcing band 21 and the reinforcing band 22 at its lower edge, the latter band and the shell being curved up at their rear portions as shown at 23, toV allow a swinging bottom, to be described, to swing clear of the lower edge of the bucket. Below the band 21 are secured the trunnion-brackets 24, the trunnions of which are connected with the bail 25. In the sides of the cylindrical shell 2O are formed openings for the trunnion-brackets 30 that have the flanges 31, by means of which they are fastened to the shell 20, between the front and rear portions thereof, adjacent to the latter and above the lower edge of said shell. Bolts 32 are screwed into the brackets 30 and constitute journal pins or trunnions for the Specification of Letters Patent.

hangers 33. Pins 34 in the ends of the bolts 32 prevent the latter from screwing out of place. The hangers 33 support the flanged bottom 35, which latter carries the fillingblock 36 which gages with the curved lower edge of the shell 20 and the lower reinforcing band 22, as shown at 23, when the said A locking pocket 40 extends up from the upper face of the bottom 35 and is secured thereto.
In the shell 20 is formed an opening for the insertion of the hinge pocket 41, which has a flange 42 that is fastened to said shell. In the side walls 43 of the hinge pocket 41 is supported the hinge pin 44, on which latter is pivoted the latch bolt 45, having the hook 46 and opening 49. The hook 46 can swing through an opening 52 in the shell 20, to engage with the roof 47 of the locking pocket 40, when the bottom 35 is up against the lower edges of the shell 20 and the reinforcing band 22. A pair of guide flanges 48 extend from the shell 20 and straddle the latch bolt 45. They each have an opening that gages with the o-pening 49 in said latch bolt 45 for a supplemental locking pin 50 connected with the chain 51, fastened to the shell 20 o-f the bucket, and which constitutes a supplemental locking device.
After the charge has been allowed to escape from the bucket the bottom 35 is in the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1, and to lock the bottom in position it may be pulled up, o-r t-he bucket may be lowered and the bottom come in Contact with the floor below, and in either case the said bottom 35 will be brought in engage-ment with lower edges of the shell 20 and reinforcing band 22, the filling block 36 engaging the curved portions of lower edge of the shell 20 and band l22, and constituting a counter-balance. At
the same time the hook 46 will be. brought under the roof 47 of the locking pocket 40 which will lock the bottom in place the bolt vengage the hook 46 from the roof 47 of the locking pocket 40, and the bottom 35 will drop to its lowered position and allow the contents of the bucket to' be discharged.
The bucket is specially adapted for handling concrete, but may be used for various other materials.
The location of the bolts 32 that constitute the trunnions for the hangers 33 enables an operator to easily close the bottom from the front side thereof, and this location of the hangers also allows the bucket to be handled in a small area, as through a conduit, or on a small platform and the like.
Having described my invention I claim:
l. In a bucket the combination of a body, t-he lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a bottom hinged to the sides of the bucket between the front and rear thereof, a filling block on said bottom, and means to lock the bottom to the body of the bucket.
2. In a bucket the combination of a body, the lower edge of said bodyT curved up at its rear portion, a flanged bottom hinged to the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom, and 'means to lock the bottom to the body of the bucket.

In a bucket the combination of a body, the lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a bottom hinged to the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom to gage with the curved portion of wsaid lower edge, a hinge pocketcarried by the bucket, a latch bolt pivoted in said pocket, a hook on the bolt, and a locking pocket on the bottom to engage said hook.

In a bucket the combination of a body, the lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a bottom hinged to the sides of the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom to gage with the curved portion of said lower edge, a hinge pocket carried by the bucket,'a latch bolt pivoted in said pocket, a hook on the bolt, a locking pocket on the bottom to engage said hook. and means to hold the hook-in place.
5. In a bucket the combination of a body, the lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a bottom hinged to the sides and adjacent to the rear of the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom to gage with the curved portion of said lower edge, a hinge pocket carried by the bucket, a latch boltpivoted in said pocket, a hook on the bolt, a locking pocket on the said bottom to engage said hook, guide f'langes extending from the body of the bucket and straddling the latch bolt, and a locking pin to connect the latch bolt with the guide flanges.
6. In a bucket the combination of a cylindrical body, the lower edge of' said body curved up at its rear portion, a flanged bottom hinged to the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom to gage with the curved portion of said lower edge, a hinge pocket fastened to the body and extending therein, a latch bolt having an opening pivcted in said pocket, a hook on the bolt, a
locking pocket on the bottom to engage with 1 said hook, a pair of guide flanges with an opening in each extending from the body of the bucket and straddling the latch bolt, and
a pin in the openings in the bolt and said guide flanges.
7. In a bucket the combination of a cylindrical body, the lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a flanged bottom hinged to the sides of the body of the bucket, a filling block on said bottom to gage with the curved portion of said lower edge, and a locking device between the cylindrical body and bottom.
8. In a bucket the combination of a body,
the lower edge of said body curved up at its rear portion, a bottom hinged to the sides of the bucket, a hinge pocket carried by the bucket, a latch bolt having an opening pivoted in said pocket, a locking pocket on the bottom to engage said latch bolt, guide flanges having openings extending from the body of' the bucket and a pinto lock the latch bolt to the said guide flanges.
