BUGKET-DUMPING DEVICE.

citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county ofNiagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bucket- Dumping Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
. This invention relates to a device which is used in connection with center dump buckets usedin excavating work and similar work. 7
The principal obj ectof the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will hold the bottom plates of the bucket in a closed position and which may be released to permit dirt to drop out through the bottom of the bucket.
Another object of this dumping device is to provide a mechanism of the character described which is so constructed that the device is operated in the same manner for opening as for closing the-bottom plates of the bucket.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is-a side elevation of a bucket, the bottom being in a closed position and showing the invention in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the bucket with the bottom plates open. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the releasing de vice adjusted in order to cause the bottom plates to open a less degree than shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the bucket with the bottom plates closed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the releasing and holding devices with parts of the device removed. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the holding device.
This invention is intended as a device for holding the bottom plates 10 of a dump bucket 11 in either a closed or an open position, the dump bucket being provided with a center bar 12 provided with side hooks 13, and the bottom plates 10 having links 14 extending therefrom and connected with the Specification of Letters Patent.

lower end of a supporting bar 15 having hooks 16 formed intermediate its height.
The holding device comprises the frame having the side bars 17 which are connected at their lower ends by the reduced neck 18 and having their upper end portions held in spaced relation by a block 19 secured in place by means of the pins 20. This block 19 is provided with a transversely extending opening 21 which communicates with a vertically extending slot 22, the slot 22 being provided with a reducedupper end portion forming a pocket 23. A latch 24 is slidably mounted in the slot 22 and is provided with a reduced neck 25 fitting into the pocket 23. A spring 26 is coiled about the neck 25 and has its upper end bearing against the plate 27 so that the spring will normally hold the latch in a lowered position. A lever 28 is pivotally mounted upon the pivot pin 29 and extends through the opening 21 of the block 19 with its enlarged central portion 30 positioned in the slot 31 of the latch 24. It should be noted that the end portions of the lever eX- tend through the block 19 upon each side so that the latch may be operated either from above'or below according to the end with which the operating line 32 is connected. It is, of course, obvious that the line 32 may be connected with each end of the lever.
A plate 33 which is substantially V-shaped in construction, is pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin 34 and is provided at one end with a plurality of openings 35 so that a link 36 carried by a chain 37 may be adjustably connected with one end of the plate 33. This chain 37 has a hook 38 at one end so that the chain may be connected with the hooks 16 carried by the bars 15. The opposite end portion of the plate 33 is provided with the notches 39 in which the latch 24 fits in order to hold the plate in the position shown in Fig. 2 thus permitting the bottom plates of the bucket to remain open. From a comparison of Figs. 2 and 3, it will readily be apparent that by adjusting the link 36 from one of the openings 35 to the other that the degree at which the bottom plates are opened, may be regulated accordingto the speed with which it is desired to have the bucket empty. An arm 40 extends from the plate 33 and a rod 41 has its enlarged angular head 42 pivotally connected to the arm 40, the rod passing through an angle bar 43 carried at the upper end of one of the side bars 17. A spring 44 is mounted upon the rod 41 between the angle bar 43 and the head 42 so that the plate 33 will be normally held in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4. A hand hole 45 is provided so that if the bucket is empty and it is desired to move the plate from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, the fingers may be passed through the opening 45 and the plate thus raised.
When using this device, the plate is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 thus holding the bottom plates closed. bucket is filled with dirt or cement or whatever is to be hauled in the bucket, and thebucket raised by means of the chain 46 and carried to the place where it is desired to dump the bucket. The line 32 is then pulled thus rocking the lever 28 upon its pivot point and drawing the latch upwardly thus permitting the end 47 of the plate 33 to pass the latch, and the plate to swing to the position shown in Figs. 2 or 3. This plate is swung to the position shown in Figs. 2 or 3 by the weight of the material in the wardly to open the bucket. After the plate has been released, the line 32 is released thus permitting the latch to return to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the plate 33 will be prevented from returning to the normal position and thus leaving the bottom plates of the bucket open. The line 32 is again pulled and allows the door to close and the bucket is then lowered to the place where it is to be filled and the spring will cause thedevice to lock itself for the next bucketful. It should be understood that it is particularly convenient where the derrick boom fails to reach a position to be filled by 10 or 15 feet. By causing the bucket to swing and tripping the device when the bucket reaches the end of the swing, the material is deposited where desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A dump bucket comprising a body portion, bottom plates hinged to said body por tion, a handle, a vertical supporting bar, links pivotally connecting said supporting bar with said bottom plates, a frame,.a plate pivotally carried by said frame, a cable connecting said frame with said handle, a rod pivotally connected with said plate to the opposite side of its pivot point from the cable carried thereby, an arm extending from said frame to guide said rod, a spring mounted upon said rod and abutting against said arm to normally hold said shaft in a raised position, and a latch carried by said frame and engaging said plate to releasably hold the same in a raised or lowered position.

6. A device of the character described comprising a frame having side bars and a block connecting said side bars, said block provided with a vertically extending pocket and with a transversely extending opening communicating with said pocket, a plate pivotally connected with one of said side bars, and provided with teeth in each end, resilient means for holding said plate in a desired position, a latch slidably mounted. in said pocket and adapted to engage the teeth of said plate, a spring. in said pocket for normally holding said latch in engagement with said plate, and a lever pivot-ally mounted in said opening and passing through the opening formed in said latch, and said lever being adapted to raise said latch out of engagement with said plate.
7. A device of the character described comprising a frame having side bars and a block connecting said side bars, a plate pivotally mounted upon one of said side bars, an arm extending from said plate, a guiding arm extending from one of said side bars, a rod passing through said guiding arm and having its lower end pivotally connected with said arm, a coil spring mounted upon said rod between said guiding arm and the lower end of said rod, a latch carried by said block and normally engaging said plate to prevent pivotal movement thereof, and means carried by said block for raising said latch out of engagement with said plate.
