Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE FoonT', a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Hoisting-Bucket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoisting buckets, and has especial reference to bottom dump hoisting carried by the bucket.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved form of bucket in which the closure will remain shut during the conveyance of material, and which, at the conclusion of the lowering operation, will leave the closure free to open.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for effecting the closure of the bucket before loading.
A still further object of the inventionis to provide an improved form of such bucket that may be readily converted into a manually dumped bucket, the parts remaining substantially the same.
The invention consists in general of a bottom dump bucket provided with a closure arranged to be released for opening when the bucket is placed on the ground.
The invention further consists in certain novel arrangements of details and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, and Figure 1 is an end elevation of a bucket constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial end elevation of a bucket provided with a modified form of latch, the bucket being arranged for release upon contact with the ground. Fig. 4 is the arrangement used when the bucket is intended for manual dumping, the view being similar to Fig. 3.
The bucket consists of a body portion 10 having a closure at the bottom thereof, preferably consisting of a pair of shovel-shaped doors 11 provided with arms 12 pivotally connected with the body, as at 13. In the form of latch lever shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever is provided with a beveled oint 22 terminating in a hooked portion-23. n the operation of this form of the device, when, the bucket is loaded, it is in the position indicated in Fig. 1. If, now, the device be lowered, the bucket, upon contacting with the ground, will, of course, come to rest. The bail, however, may be still lowered. This will cause the in 21 to descend and strike the beveled point 22 of the latch lever, moving that point aside until the hook 23 has been reached. The latch lever will then resume the position shown in Fig. 1, but the pin 21 will now lie beneath the hook portion. If, now, the bucket be hoisted, the pivot pin 15 will slip down in the slot 20, as the bail will be held fixed in its lowered position. This will permit the doors 11 to open. When it is again desired to close the doors 11, it is simply necessary to raise the latch lever 17 and release the pin 21. The bail will then move upward, carrying with it the pivot pin 15 and, consequently, closing the doors.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 3, the latch lever is provided with a hookshaped slot 24 in place of the bevel point and hook of the other form. The operation of the parts is, nevertheless, identical. If it be desired to convert the bucket into a manually operated dump bucket, it is merely necessary to rearrange the parts in the position shown in Fig. 4, all the parts being identical, with the exception that bolts 25 are provided for the attachment of the bail, which is rigidly fixed to the bucket. From an inspection of Fig. 4, it be desired to dump the bucket when arranged in this manner, it is merely necessary to lower the latch lever 17 This will release the pin 15 and permit the doors to open.
I claim 1. In a bucket of the kind described, a body, a door pivoted to said body, a bail slidably connected to said body, and a link held on said door having a pin and slot connection with said bail.

In a bucket of the kind described, a body, a pair of doors pivoted to said body, pins oppositely disposed on the ends of said body, a bail of inverted U shape provided with slots in the legs fitting over the pins on said body, lugs formed on said bail, a latch lever mounted on the pins projecting from the body, links pivotally connected to said doors, and pins connecting said links and extending into the slots in said bail.
5. In a bucket of the kind described, a body having a pair of end walls provided with angularly disposed lower edges, a door pivoted to said body, a bail slidably connected to said body, and a link held on to said door having a pin and slot connection with said bail.
6. In a bucket of the kind described, a body having a pair of end walls, provided with angularly disposed lower edges arranged to form a downwardly extending peak, a pair of doors pivoted to said body, a bail slidably connected with said body, links held on to said doors, said links being pivotally connected and provided with a pin and slot connection with said bail.
