GHIOI p13 WILLIAM H. INSLEY AND ALVIN C. BASMUSSEN, 0F IIQDIEJJAPOLIS, INDIANA, AS- SIGNORS TO INSLEY IEANUFACTURING COMPANY/OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A
CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
Application filed June 21,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. TNsLEr and Arvin C. RASMUSSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Dumping Bucket, of which the following is a specification.
in dumping buckets of that type which is equipped with a downwardly-swinging bottom, difliculty is experienced in releasing the bottom to discharge the load, because, when the full weight of the load becomes impressed upon the operating or controlling lever, said lever is apt to be jerked from the hands of the operator.
The object of our invention is to provide a controlling means for the downwardlyswinging door, or doors, of such dumping bucket, of such character that the operating lever will be very close to the end of its possible movement before the load with in the bucket can act upon the released door, or doors.
The accompanying drawings illustrate our invention. Fig, 1 is an end elevation in partial vertical section, of a. bucket equipped with our improvements and with the dumping doors in closed position; Fig. 2 is side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1 and in a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1; F 3 a new similar to Fig. 1, showing the parts in release position.
in the drawings, indicates an open bottomed bucket of desired form, provided at its bottom with two hinged bottom-closing doors 11, 11, supported by bridle chains 12, 12, which are connected to chain 13, passed upwardly and downwardly over a pulley let and attached at its outer end to the upper end of a goose-neck lever 15, which is pivoted on pin 16 to a link 17 pivoted at 18 upon suitable brackets 19 secured to the side of the bucket 10, the gooseneck and link 17 forming a self-locking toggle, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1.
Link 17 is provided with a short, arm 19 having a projecting pin 20 arranged to be engaged by the operating lever 21, which is pivoted on pin 18. Lever 21 may be locked in place by a removable pin 22 passed through brackets 23 and into lever 21.
The operation is as follows: l/Vith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 3, a
downward movement of the upper end of le- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 1920. Serial No. 396,356.
ver 2l acting through pin 16, swings link 17 x wardly'to the position shown in Fig. this movement drawing"tl1e goose-neck and the outer, end of chain 13 downwardly, so as to close the doors 11, lever 21 serving to swing links 17 far enough to carry the pivot point 16 slightly beyond and inside the vertical plane of the axis of pin 1", thereby automatically locking the toggle 15-17 in place and holding the doors 11 against downward displacement under the action of the load within the bucket. When it is desired to dump a load within bucket 10, lever 21 is released and swung upwardly. This upward movement for a major portion thereof is entirely free and independent of the toggle 15-17, but when lever 21 has reached a point distant from its ultimate upper position, lacking an angle approximately equal to that required to swing link 17 enough to carry pin 16 outsidethe vertical plane of the axis of pin 18, lever 19 engages a discharge opening and a closure thereformovable in the direction of opening under the action of the supported load, of a support for said closure, comprising a pair of pivotally-connected links, one connected to the bucket and the other to the closure, a shiftable operating member arranged for movement independent of said links, said operating member and links having inter engaging portions limiting the independent movement 01"? the operating member at op-- posite ends of such independent movement, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bucket having a discharge opening and a closure therefor movable in the direction of opening under the action of the supported load, of a support for said closure comprising a shiftable member connected with the closure, and a manipulating member associated With said shittable member to move the same to and from closure-sustaining position, said manippermitthe pivotal connection to be shifted to either side of the plane of the pivotal Memes support on the bucket i'elative to the line of the cable, and a manipulatinglever p1v- 'ote'd. upon the bucket and having two one- Way interengajgements with one of the links,
substantially as and for 'the purpose se forth. v
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 8thvday of Julie, A. D. one thousand nine hundred andt'wenty.
