Be it known that I, Harman P. ANDRsssN. a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, Cook county. lllinois, have invented a certain new, useful, and improved Grub-B ticket and Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a true. exact, and clear description. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' My invention relates to new and useful improvements in grab buckets commonly known as clam shell grabs, and also relates t0 improvements in the operating thereto. thereby insuring the sinking of the bucket in o the material; which notwithstanding its great spread or "reach shall be of minimum height when in hoisting condition. i. e. when closed; which shall be so constructed that it will close upon and dig into the material with great power and certainty; which shall be of such form that the bucket part s proper shall constitute the largest portion of the device, to the end that a. grab bucket of maximum capacity-may be worked in an opening or batch of minimum size, without limitation by or interlerence from the mere operating parts of the bucket;
' which shall be of such form and so attached'toits operating cables that the bucket may be worked beneath the overhanging edges of a hatch opening, deck or covering inclosing the material to be moved; and finally, which shall be of very simple construction, comprising few parts of comparatively low cost.

My device is particularly intended and adapted for handling coal, ore, and other heavy bulk material. Devices of its class commonly comprise two scoops or bucket portions adapted to form-a single receptacle when their cutting edges are brought together. When such a bucket is lowered the scoops are separated or opened, and in this opened condition they are dropped upon the loose material and by reason of their weight sink into the same. Force is then applied to raise the bucket and this force is so exerted as to first result in causing the scoops to dig iuto'the material and to close together therein, thereby inclosing a load of material. In this condition the loaded bucket is elevated and usually conveyed to a distant point, where the load is deposited by opening the bucket. This general construction and the foregoing method or manner of operation are preserved in my invention; but I have been able to markedly simplify the construction of my bucket and operating mechanism, compared with the devices and apparatus in present use.
In lieu of scoops or bucket portions which are con.- nected by the numerous pivotal joints heretofore considered necessary in a wide opening bucket, I employ two simple rigid bucket portions, each attached to a common frame by a single pivot. Thus at once it will be seen that my invention possesses several advantages over others.
A further distinctive feature of my invention as better explained hereinafter, resides in separating'the pivots of the two scoops or bucket portions is considerable distance;'whereby a bucket of great spread is secured within small vertical dimensions. The use of this single feature results in great simplification of the structure.

Referring now to the drawings for. details of construction and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that my novel grab bucket, irrespective of the operating part, comprises only three members, to-wit; a frame A, and two scoops or bucket. portions, B'B.
' The frame A comprises two side members a-a, and
three shafts a-a'-a*, suitable means (not shown) being usually employed for securingshafts in place. The shafts a'--a are the pivots lotthe scoops 13-13 and in this form of my bucket said scoops are rigidly secured to respective shafts, to turn therewith as hereinafter described. The shaft a is preferably fixed in the plate a--a and carries the differential winding mechanism hereinafter described. If desired each scoop may be made from a single piece of heavy sheet metal, but as the lower portions are subjected tothe greatest wear, I' prefer to make them of heavier mate- 'rial than the'upper portions which less frequently require repairs. For this reason each scoop is shown to be composed of a heavy lower portion 13 and two lighter, upper portions 6, the latter connected by a -cross bar b. For opening the bucket, I employ cables C--C, having their lower ends attached to cranks arm DD fixed on respective shafts a-a', or if desired the cables may be secured directly upon the sides of the scoops or bucket members B-B. other cross bars like unto I: being used in such cases (see Fig. 6). Obviously the attachment of the cables directly to the scoops is equivalent to attachment to the arms, DD, innsmuch as said arms are rigidly connected to respective scoops B-B through the medium of the shafts au. In the absence of a force tending to elevate thc frame a, the weight of said frame plus the weight of the parts carried thereby, plus the weight of the upper or inncr ends of the nn-mbcrs 13-13, is sullicient to cause the descent of thc inner ends of the scoops when rclicved from the closing force, said Weight overbalancing the lower portions of the scoops; hcncc the suspension of the bucket wholly by the cables C- causes the opening of the bucket, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. (I -brepi -scnt pairs of toothed intermeshing gears or segments, on the shafts a a, and hence rigidly connected with the mcnibers B-B. These connect the twoa oop or bucket portionsB- B and eer retoi'qnnlize their movements. pn-m'cnting the unequal opening or closing thereof.
I'may employ a single cable C for each side or member of the bucket, but Fig. 1 discloses the preferred arrangement, comprising duplicate cables C, connected to respective arms D. In places where it is unnecessary to turn or swing the bucket, I use a single pair of cables C, but in all other cases, I employ the two pairs of cables (3 -0 and C C', -as shown in 1 and 4, such duplication of the cables adapting the bucket to be swung or turned with great ease, as better explained hereinafter.
As before stated the winding or closing mechanism is arranged on the shaft a. It comprises a roller having small portions E, and a large portion E, whereon'ths closing cables or chains E -E, and the hoisting cable E are respectively wound. The ends of the short draft cables E are secured to the small portions or hubs E of 'the winding pulley and their outer ends are fastened in the cross bars, b, or directly to the sides of the scoops as may be desired. The turning of the pulley on the shaft a, either releases the members, B, or draws them together. This indrawing or closing forcs'is exerted on the pulley E by means of the main hoisting cable E, wound once or rriore about the large pulley E", and
, fastened thereon. The cables E and E" are wound in opposite directions on the pulley and its hubsand the difference in diameter provides sufficient leverage to forcibly wind the draft cables on the smaller pulleys or drums and thereby close the scoops B with great diggingpower. The operation is clearly shown by the dottcdand the full lines of Fig. 2. The closing and hoisting effort is exerted on the cable E, while the cables C-'-C and C-C are slack. The slack of the cable E having been withdrawn from pulley E, and the members B.B having been closed together, the pulley E is held against further rotation by the cables Ii -E, after which the pulley E serves simply as an anchor or fastening for the cable, and further pull on the cable 15 elevates the bucket bodily. It will be noted that the cable E is located centrally in the bucket, passing over a central sheave, or through an eye E, provided in the frame piece a, and loosely ottachcd to the shafts a-'-a. From the momcnt that the members 15-8 are closctl together, the cables (-C may also be drawn t rnt to assist in raising the bucket. Obviously the dumping of the loaded bucket may be accomplished at any time by slacking the central cable E, and holding the other cables, thereby lcaring the bucket suspended by cables or (J.C'; orby holding the closing line and pulling on the opening cables C(?.
It should be noted that the winding or closing mochnnisnr of my grab buck-ct occupies a definite, unchanging position with respect to the pivots of the scoops.
