ERWIN COX, OF WESTFIELD, INDIANA.
SILO-DOOR O PERATGR.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 191%.
Application filed February 28, 193.6. Serial No. 80,945.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERwIN Cox, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Westiield, county of Hamilton, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful SilO-Door Operator; and I do here by declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of a door with reference particularly to its use on silos, the object being to provide novel means for supporting the door whereby the door may be swung upwardly into open position, whereas heretofore they have swung to one side.
By means of this invention the silo door may be opened before the contents of the silo are below it, thereby doing away with the necessity of removing and wasting some of the contents thereof in order to open the door.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims. a
Figure l is a front elevation of the door in its closed position. .Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2*; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2, showing the door in its elevated position. Y
In the drawings there is shown a silo 10, in which there is an opening for a door 11. Secured to said silo on each side thereof, there is a bar 12 which passes in front of the upper part of the opening. On said .loar there is a, sleeve 13 adapted to turn freely thereon. $ecured on said sleeve there are hanger arms 14: pivotally secured at their other ends to the members 15 on each side of the door 11. v
Near one end of the sleeve 13 there is secured a lever 16 which, in combination with the hanger arms let, acts as a fulcrum to swing the door upwardly in its opened position as shown in Fig. 3. There is a locking member 17 secured at one side of the door to the silo, which has an arm 18 adapted to be moved into engaging position so as to lock the lever 16, and hold the door in its open and upward position.
When it is desired to open the door, the lever 16 is pulled downwardly, which forces the hanger arm llinwardly and upwardly which swings the door 11 on its pivot member 15 into position shown in Fig. 3, in which position it may be locked.
The invention claimed is:
1. The combination with a door frame and a door, pair of L-shaped arms pivoted to the door near the middle thereof and, when the door is closed, extending upwardly, means for pivotally connecting the hinging member near the top of the door frame, and a handle rigidly secured to the upper end of said arms, the length of the upper section of each of said arms being substantially the same as the thickness of the door frame, whereby when the door is open the other .ends of said arms and the door will lie against the inner surface of: the frame above the door.
The conibinati 11 with a silo door frame and a door, of a tr: isverse rod secured near the top of the door frame, a tube thereon, L-shaped arms secured to said tube and extending down when the door is closed and pivoted to thc'door near the middle thereof, and a handle rigidly secured to said tube, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ERWIN COX.
