UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY E. GILPPLE, OF WILLIAMSVILLE, NEW YORK,
.ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TOALVIN A. KLEIN AND ONE-THIRD TO ALBERT Gr. BEACH, BOTH OF WILLIAMSVILLE, NEW
YORK.
BAG-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROY E. GIPPLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at VVilliamsville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to bag holders and to an arrangement thereof whereby they may be readily adapted for use with bags of different sizes and whereby the mouth of the bag may be raised or lowered as it is being filled without the use of screws or other clamping means.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly broken away, of a holder embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the hopper removed. Fig. 3 is a view in detail in front elevation of the supporting clamp. Fig. 4 is a view in detail slightly enlarged of a bag clamp. Fig. 5 is a view in sect-ion on or about line azx of Fig. 1.
As herein indicated a suitable base 1 of any preferred design has an upright standard 2 preferably a channel bar in section. The stem 3 of a yoke 4 is arranged to move longitudinally on the standard and carries a pair of rollers 5 bearing against the opposite flanges thereof, the rollers being set one above the other so that they grip the channel and hold the yoke in position when the outer end of the yoke is unsupported. If the outer end of the yoke is lifted it may be moved freely up and down the standard. A ring 6 is secured on the yoke 4 so as to be substantially horizontal when the latter is gripping the standard.
A pair of semicircular clamping members 7 are pivoted together at their ends and encircle the ring. One end of one member, as indicated at 9, is pivoted to an offset hinge plate 10 secured on the ring 6, the free end of the other member 7 has a latch lever 11 fulcrumed at 11 on ears 7 of one member 7, and having a hook l2 pivoted thereto at 12 adapted to interlock with a latch 13 longitudinally movable on the plate 10 and normally re- Specification of Letters Patent.

tracted by a spring member 14. Preferably the latch plate is slotted and moves on studs or screws 15 on the plate. The hook 12 and lever 11 are so disposed that when the lever is in closed toggle position, the members 7 grip the ring and any bag which may be interposed and hold the same firmly in position. The lower margin of the ring 6 is slightly out-turned and the lower mating portions of the members 7 are correspond ingly shaped to seat themselves thereon. A hopper 28 is removably supported in. the ring 6. To support the members 7 when the hook is released and swung back, a bracket 17 is secured to the underface of the yoke on which one of the members lies when moved toward the standard. Handles 18 at diametrically opposite points of the ring 6 facilitate the vertical adjustment of the device on the standard 2. To permit the device to be secured to the tail-board or other part of a wagon box or the like a clamp 19 is detachably secured to the upper portion of the standard as by a set screw 20 or like means passing through a block 21 on the clamp which is adapted to slide on the standard.
Preferably the clamp is spring-j awed and consists of a rod bent between its ends forming parallel arms 22, the portion of the rod at the bend being recurved to form a hook handle 23 to facilitate the attaching of the clamp over the wagon board. Hesiliency is obtained by turning the rod on itself to form a pair of eyelets 24 and an offset 25 for each arm acts as a bearing to rest on the upper edge of the follower board. The arms may be bent outwardly for a portion of their length as indicated at 26 to avoid the tie rod 27 common in wagon box construction. By this arrangement of parts a bag holder is obtained which may rest on the ground or be suspended readily from the vehicle and which may be raised or lowered instantly without the necessity of loosening screws or clamps.
What I claim as my invention is A bag holder comprising a yoke, a horizontally disposed ring secured to the yoke, a pair of semi-circular pivotally connected clamping members, a hinge plate on the ring to which one end of one clamping memher is pivoted, a spring-retracted latch plate on the hinge, a clamping lever on the free end of the other clamping member, a hook I In testimony whereof I affix my signature 011 the lever adapted to interlock With the in presence of two Witnesses.
latch )late when the members encircle the Y s ring, 5nd a bracket on the yoke normally ROY GIPPLE' free of the clamping members and adapted to support the clamping members when opened.
