Description

(N0 Model.)
J. H. CRAIG. BAG HOLDER.
N0. 471,466. Patented Mm. 22, 1892.
NITED STATES T0 V R. BARLEY,
OF SAME PLAGE.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICA'IION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 471,466, cla'ced. March 22, 1892.
Application filed June 20, 1891.
T0 all wham it may concern:
Be it'known that I, J AMES H. CRAIG, a Citizen 0f t-he United States, residing ab Marion, in the county 0f Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I C10 deelare tl1e fo llowing t0 be a full, elear, and exact cleseription of the invention, such as will enable others skillecl in the art to which it appettains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and 130 the letters 0f referenoe marked thereon, which form a part of this specifieation. i
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bag-holders; and it has for its object t0 provicle a simple and eheaply-construeted' device of the character named whieh may be readily adjustecl, so as 130 adapt it for use in connection With bags 0f different sizes. The bag t0 be held open while being filled may be quicklyancl readily seenred t0 the holder, will be secnrely held, ancl may be readily detaehecl.
The device is particularly aclapted f01 use in connection With mail-bags.
T0 these ends ancl t0 such others as the invention may pertain the same consisus in the peculiar construetion and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in tl1e aecompanying drawings, ancl then speeifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illnstraed in the accompanying drawings, Which, with the letters of reference marked theieon, for1n a part 0f this speeification, like letters indicating like parts throughout rhe several views, and in which clrawings- Figure 1 is a t0p plan view 0f a bag-holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view 0f the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letters of reference, A designates a rectangular frame, which may be C0111- strueted of either woocl or metal.
B are lugs 01 arms, which depend from the front ancl rea1 edges, respectively 0f the rear timber B 0f tl1e said frame an(l are designed t0 embrace a strip attached to the edge of a Serial N0. 396,924. (N0 mode1.)
table 01' othe1 support to whieh it may be proposecl t0 attaoh the bag-holder when in use.
O and C are curved arms, whieh form the supports f01 the bag. The arm O, it Will be observed, is pivoted upon a fixed pivot D upon the freut timber E 0f the frame A, and 5 at a point slightly in advance 0f the pivot D the said arm is provided with a pin 01 point F, whioh extends upward and is inclinecl slightly toward the real from ehe upper face 0f the arm. The arm O is in all respeecs similar to the arm O just described, excepting that instead 0f being pivoted upon a fixed pivot it'is pivoted upon an upwardly-exbendecl pivot or rod H, whieh is passed through a slot H near the opposite end of tl1e timber E. AI; the lower end 0f the r0cl H a sei; or thumb nut H is provided, whereby the said rod may be seourecl at any desired point within the S101: H, as will be 1eadily unrlerstood. The re'ar ends of the arms O and O are connected by means of a spiral spring I.
The operation of the device is simple and readily understood. The .frame A is secured to any suitable support by means of the downwardly-extending lugs B, which depend from the front and rear eclges of the rear timber B of the frame A. The arm O is moved so as to adapt the arms 120 the size 0f the bag 110 be held, and is secured in its adjustecl position by tightening the thumb-nut H. The mouth 0f the bag is passed over the arms and attached t0 the pins F. When the bag has been filled, the arms O ancl C are readily released from alle bag by simply forcing the outer 01' free ends of the arms inwardly against the tension' of the spring I, when the bag may be detachecl from the points F and removed from the arms.
Having thus deseribed my invention, what I elaim 130 be new, and desire t0 seeureby Letters Patent, is
The herein-describecl bag-holder, the sarne comprising, in combination, the frame A, The curved arm O, piVoted t0 the upper face 0f the frame upon a fixed pivot and having straighn portion beyond its pivot, the curved arm O,pivoted upon a rod extended through the S1013 H and providecl with straight portion beyond its pivot, the lower end of said l lugs adapted to engage the edge 0f a tab1e o1 10d. being provided With athun1b-nut IP,said othe1 suppor, snbstantially as and f0r the arms G and O being provided ab points purpose deseribed. slightly in advance 0f their pivotal points In testinuonywhereof I affixmysignaturein 5 with rearwmdly-inclined pins F and ab thei1 presence 0f 13W0 witnesses.
rear ends eonnected by means of a spira1 spring, said spring having 011e enc1 passed JAMES CRAIG through the straight portion 0f the arm Cand Witun esses: secured thereto and the rear pa1t of the frame WILLIAM L. LENFESTEY,
10 A being provided With downwardly-extended CHARLES LENFESTEY.
