SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,343, dated October 27, 1896.

Be it known that I, HANS A. SKREBERG, of Milan, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention pertains toAbag-holders, and the object thereof is to provide a device of simple and improved construction for retaining bags in an upright open position for filling, and also to provide an improved adj ustment for said device upon its support.

The invention consist-sin the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a rear4 elevation.

The supporting -standard A is provided with the foot B, while the upper end of the support is slotted vertically, as indicated at (l. A socket D encircles the support and is adapted to move vertically thereon. Hinged to the upper portion of the front side of the socket is the leaf E, and extended transversely through the leaf and socket and extending through the slot C of the support is bolt F, and arranged thereon at its outer end between the bolt-head and washer Gis the coiled spring H, While at its inner end is the adjusting thumb-screw I. W'asher G projects through a circular opening E in the back of socket D and bears directly against the support A, and by means of the pressure which the spring exerts upon the washer the latter is caused to bind the standard sufficiently to the socket to hold the device from vertical displacement.

It will of course be understood that the frictional adjustment may be varied by the thumb-screw at will.

jecting lug or shoulder L at the lower edge of the front side of the socket, and thus a clamp is provided for the one side of the upper edge of the bag, which is inserted between the bow and shoulder or lug, as will be understood. Secured to the extremities of the bow are the angle-irons M, and depending from their outer extremities are the cams N, which are adapted to clamp the sides of the bag to the bow, and thus three securingpoints are provided for the bag, which are quite sufcient to hold the mouth distended. I do not desire, however, to limit myself to the precise number of holding devices here shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. By means of the elongated slot the holder may be varied in height to accommodate itself to the depth of the bag to be iilled. By means. of the arrangement here shown and described it will be observed that the springbolt performs the double function of securing the holder to the vertical support as well as providing a holding-point for the bag.

The holder will secure a iirm grip upon the eXtreme upper edge of the bag, and thus the latter may be filled to its extreme capacity while in position upon the holder, thus avoiding the necessity of after-lling, which is necessary in many of the bag-holders now in use. It will be observed that all such devices as expanding hooks, projecting points for piercing thel bag, rbc., have been dispensed with, for these devices, which are present in many of the bag-holders now upon the market, are objectionable, as they tear and defacethe bags and so weaken them that they frequently drop from position and spill the grain from the bags.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of a support,abaghold ing clamp, and a spring-actuated bolt for holding the clamp normally closed and also for securing the clamp to the support, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a support, a socket adapted to embrace the same, a leaf hinged to the upper portion of the front side of the socket and depending therefrom, a bag-holder secured to the leaf, the bolt extended through IOO the leal` the socket and the support, the rear side of the support being recessed, the washer arranged upon the bolt within the recess and adapted to bear against the vertical support, and the spring arranged upon the bolt between its head and the said washer, whereby pressure is exerted upon the support and the socket held to proper position, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of a support,a bag-holding member, a carrier on the support to which the said bag-holding member is hinged, the bag being adapted to be coniined between the said bag-holding member and the carrier, and Jthe yielding spring-held bolt projected through the support as well as the carrier and the, bag-holding member, whereby the clamp formed by the bag-holder and carrier is held normally closed, substantially as shown and described.

The combination of an upright, a socket embracing the same and recessed upon one side, the washer arranged in the recess and adapted to bear against the support, the securing-bolt extended through the socket the support and the washer, and the spring arranged upon the bolt between the washer and the bolt-head, whereby the socket is held to position upon the support, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination ofthe vertically-slotted support, the socket embracing the same and recessed upon one side, the bolt projected through the socket and support, the Washer upon the bolt within the recess of the socket and bearing against the support, the spring arranged between the bolt -head and the washer, and a bag-holding device held to position upon the socket by the opposite end of the bolt,substantially as shown and described.

G. rlhe combination ofasupport, a bag holding and expanding dev-ice, a bolt uniting the support and the said device, and a yieldable spring arranged as a washer upon the bolt for holding the bag holding and spreading device normally in engagement with the support, substantially as shown and described,
