HIRAM B. SACKE'IT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
UNIE
SACK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May if 1916 Application filed December 26, 1908. Serial No. 469,243.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM B. SACKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sack holders, and has for its object to provide a simple device of this kind by means of which a bag or sack may be held in such position as to permit it to be filled with coal, trash or the like with the greatest facilit With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sack holder constructed in accordance with the invention, a sack in position and the hopper removed, Fig. 2 is a central transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the hopper in position, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the hopper support detached from position, and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hopper.
In the embodiment illustrated the device comprises an upright frame 1, having base pieces 2, upright side pieces 3, and an upper preferably fiat supporting bar 4, which extends between the upper ends of the side pieces, and is held upon the back edges thereof by fastening bolts 5, which extend through said supporting bar and said side pieces, and nuts 6, which screw upon said bolts against the front edges of the side pieces. An open approximately rectangular hopper supporting frame is hinged to the upper edge of the supporting bar 4 by hinges 7, which are attached to said edge of the supporting bar and to the inner face of the rear side piece 8 of the hopper supporting frame. A hopper 9 provided at its front side and ends with a continuous straight depending rim 10, is mounted in said hopper supporting frame with its rim fitting against the inner faces of the front side and end pieces thereof, the lower edge of the rim 10 at the ends of the hopper being of straight form and extending to a point approximately a distance of half the width of the end pieces of the hopper supporting frame and the lower edge of the hopper rim at the front of the hopper supporting frame being of gradual and outwardly curved formation and projecting below the lower edge of the front side piece of said frame.
In practice, a sack or bag 11 is held in position by inserting a portion of the upper edge thereof under the rear side piece 8 of the hopper supporting frame, this portion of the upper edge of the sack or bag being held in clamping relation between the rear face of said cross piece of the hopper supporting frame and the front face of the supporting bar, when said frame is in sack supporting position, or in a forward position approximately at right angles with the supporting frame 1. A portion of the re maining portion of the upper edge of the sack or bag is next inserted between the front side piece 12 of the hopper supporting frame and the hopper, the front side piece of said frame being curved slightly outwardly to provide a space between it and the front wall of the hopper to permit the insertion of a portion of a sack or bag therebetween. This portion of the upper edge of the sack or bag is held in position by a clamp 13, constructed from a single fiat piece of spring metal bent centrally upon itself to provide clamping portions 1d adapted to straddle the front side piece 12 of the hopper supporting frame. This clamp is attached to the free end of a vertically removable arm 15, pivoted to the inner face, and near the lower edge of the front side piece 12 of the hopper supporting frame so that the clamp may be readily swung up in disengaged relation with the hopper supporting frame when it is desired to release the sack or bag after having been filled.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A sack holder comprising an upright frame, a transverse support detaohably mounted at the upper end of the frame, an open rectangular sack supporting frame hinged to the upper edge of the support whereby a portion of a sack may be clamped between the support and the sack supporting frame, a spring metal clamping arm pivoted to the inner face of the front piece of the supporting frame in position to swing in a vertical plane parallel therewith and provided at its free end with a laterally extending U-shaped clamping portion adapted to straddle the front piece of the sack supporting frame and clamp portions of a sack against the inner and outer faces thereof, and a hopper removably mounted in the sack supporting frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
