Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,190 r.
Applicatinu filed March 13, 1906- Serial No. 305,887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edwardsville, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bag holders for holding bags or sacks while being filled; and the object of the invention is to provide a device for this purpose which is ad tion of the holder as adjusted for narrow sacks. Fig. 3
is a sectional detail view of the preferred means for locking the holder at different heights. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a sack or bag holder constructed as shown in Fig. 2., but provided with means for hanging it up instead of with a floor support.
As in general use a bag holder is fioor supported, the preferred construction comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, a base plate 1, a vertical standard 2 rigidly secured thereto, and the holder proper, which is hereinafter described. The standard 2 is more strongly connected to the base by means of an arched brace 3, as shown.
Mounted upon the standard 2, so as to slide thereon, is a cast metal sleeve 3, the front of which is provided with an inclined integral plate 4.
Secured to plate 4 is the back 5. of the two-ended or open fronted hopper, the sides of which are designated 6. and 7. Preferably the hopper is constructed of sheet metal.
Journaled in circular openings in the ends 6 and 7 is a rockshaft 8, provided with spurs 9 for penetrating the upper edge of the sack or bag and thereby supporting the same.
The back 5 is reinforced with a metal strip 10* with spurs 10 for the purpose of sustaining the sack.
A lever 12 is fixed upon one end of the rock shaft 8, and when a bag is being supported, said lever is engaged by a suitable spring catch 14 which is pressed inward by the operator to release the lever 12 when the bag has been filled. As shown in the drawings, the catch 14 consists of a strip of spring steel, secured at its one end to end 6 of the hopper, and bent outward, thus forming a projection over which the lever 12 must pass when turned to locked position, and said projection retains the rock-shaft against the pull of the sack while being filled. The sack is released by turning the lever 1.2 up and forward, thus depressing the spurs 9.
The end 6 is preferably set upright, on account of the action of lever 12. but the other end 7 is inclined, as shown. Connected to this end 7, preferably by a hinge 15, is a block 16 (if of wood) which may be made hollow if made of sheet metal. When in the full line position, said block reduces the width of the hopper by as much as its own thickness, and when swung outwardly and allowed to hang as indicated by dotted lines, it thereby increases the width of the hopper.
Returning to the slidable sleeve 3. as shown in Fig. 3. Ratchet teeth 18 are cut in the front face of the standard, and the front inner face 17 of sleeve 3. is caused to -rest upon any one of said teeth. To permit this adjustability, the back wall of the sleeve 3. is spaced outwardly from the standard and is provided with a tightening wedge 20 or other suitable device for clamping the sleeve to the standard in such manner that the sleeve aforesaid is firmly clamped to the standard with the part 17 of the sleeve 3, securely resting in one of the notches of the standard.
The operation is obvious: When the hopper is to be raised or lowered the wedge 20 is first withdrawn, the sleeve 3 is then raised or lowered as desired when the wedge 20 is reinstated, thus again drawing the sleeve 3. against the standard with the part 17 resting in one of the notches 18.
A modification, adapted to be hung up against a bin against the wall of a room or of a car is shown in Fig. 4. It consists. of the hopper 567 and the bag holding devices 89 10, and an upwardly extending bar 22, secured to the back of the hopper. If the bar 22 is of wood, a block 23 may be interposed between the same and the back of the hopper. If made of metal, it will be bent and secured directly to the hopper. Said bar is provided with a hole 23, by which it may be suspended from a spike or hook, when in use as well as when not in use. I
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bag holder, comprising a standard, a sleeve vertically adjustable thereon, a hopper supported by the sleeve, one
side of which hopper is open, a series of spurs arranged on the lower edge and rear side of the hopper, a rock shaft journaled to the hopper and extending across the front and lower edge thereof, spurs integral with said rock shaft,
a lever fixed on one end of the rock shaft, and a spring catch arranged on one end of the hopper for engaging the free end of the lever.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN TAYLOR.
