Description

CHARLES W. STAFFORD, 0l? SAYBHOGK, GGNFEGHCU.
Letters Patent No. 03,665, dated April (J, 1867.
MPROVED ASH 0R GRBAGEBOX.
@tigt cigimii nicest tr iii that tittrtszitnit :uit matita ont t tige time. Y
TO ALL WHOM I'i MAY CONGERN Be it known that I, CHARLES lV. STAFFORD, of Saybrook, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Port-able Garbage and Ash-Bex; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make andv use the same.
The drawing represents an elevation of my invention, partly in section.
The object ot` this invention is to obtain a garbage and ash-box, which will bc capable of being readily moved and dumped so that its contents may be discharged into a cart, and also have a lid to prevent odor from escaping, so arranged or applied that it may be readily raised or opened when the box 'to be dumped, and still prevented from casually opening when the box is being moved.
A represents the body or main portion of the garbage or ash-box constructed etl sheet iron and provided with a cast-iron base and top rim. The body A :may be et' cylindrical or slightly conical form, and of such dimensions that it will be of the capacity of an ordinary barrel. ln the base of the body A of the box there is inserted a roller, B, which may be of cast iron. This roller admits oin the box being drawn along` with the greatest facility by simply canting it a trifle so that it will rest or bear on the roller. To the lower part oi' the body A, :1t opposite sides or points, there are attached two handles, C C, and an annular handle, D, is fitted in brackets, u, which are attached to the upper part of the body A, the handle D extending entirely around the body A, and the brackets a being so curved or bent that D will be out a suitable distance from A to admit of beingeonveniently grasped by the hand. The top rim or part of the body A is cast with a permanent cover, E, of semispherical form, and F is a cover of similar form, but of rather larger dirnensiciis, so that it may slide or work over E, said cover F beingr attached to the top rini of thcibody A by rivets or screws, Z1, which forni joints or hinges. The ixed or permanent cover E has a spring catch, G, attached, which holds or secures the movable or sliding cover F in an open state, and by friction or pressure holds it in a closed state, so that F cannot casually slide open when the device is moved along on the roller B. The device may be readilyl lifted and dumped by two persons, one at each side, the persons grasping the lower handles C with one hand, and the upper annular handle D with the other hand. It may be constructed at a verymodera-te cost, and beingwholly of metal is tire-proof, so that ashes may be deposited in it Without any danger Whatever.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A portable garbage and ash-box coi'istructediot' iron, or other suitable metal, having a. roller, B, in its base, fixed and movable seinispherica-l covers, E F, and suitable handles, all constructedand arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
The above specication ot.' my invention signed bynie this 20th day of September, 1866.
C. W. STAFFORD.
