IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,157, dated J one 27, 1876; application filed April 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY L. BUoKLEY, of Mankato, in the county of BlueEarth' and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Box. Lids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention consists, mainly,in providing an oil-box lid, adapted to slide vertically, to cover or uncover the opening in the box in connection with the box with certain inclined surfaces, by means of which it is caused to press tightly upon the opening when closed for the purpose of excluding dust from the box. It consists, also, in the combination of a peculiarly-eonstructed sliding lid, with a spring-bar adapted to hold the same in place, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figures 1 and 8 represent perspective views of the lid as applied to oilboxes of different forms; Figs. 2, 5, and 9, views of the ends of the oil-boxes; Figs. 3, 4, and 10, views of the lids; and Figs. 6 and 7, views of the securing-spring.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

Arepresents an oilbox, the open end of which is provided with suitable flanges a (1, adapted to hold the lid and guide it in its vertical movement. B represents the lid, provided with the overhanging flange I), having the reccess b and also the supporting-ends b as shown. C represents a spring or spring-bar, secured at one end to the box in such manner as to turn freely, and provided at the other with a head adapted to rest in the recess 1) of the overhanging flange I), as shown.

Fig. 2 represents a similarly-constructed box, with the exception that the guide-flanges are placed on the lid instead of on the box. The general construction of the parts is as before described, but they are otherwise constructed as follows: The guide-flanges a a, Figs. 2 and 5, are formed with their inner faces 00 so inclined inward from the top downward, so that the space between them and the face of the box is made tapering, as shown. The edges w m of the box-lid B, Fig. 4, are formed in a corresponding manner, so that when it is pushed to place it is forced by the inclined surface of the flanges tightly against the face of the box, and thus caused to close the opening effectually against the entrance of pushed down to its place.

The construction shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10 is precisely the same in principle, the changes being only those incidental to placing the flanges on the lid.

The lid when in place is properly secured by turning the spring until its head rests in the recess of the overhanging flange.

By means of the described construction, a simple and cheap lid is obtained, which is suitably secured in place under ordinary circumstances, and yet is readily removed when it is desired to uncover the box. The dust is effectually excluded by the double means employed first, by pressing the lid tightly against the face of the box by means of the proper inclined surfaces and, second, by the overhanging flange, and the tightly-fitting surfaces about the edges of the lid. The supporting-arms and the overhanging flanges effectually secure the lids, so that they cannot drop down vertically, and fall off.

Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the axle-box A, havthe parts 00 y inclined laterally and longitudinally, the lid B hating the parts wy similarly inclined, the lid being shut upon the box by a double-wedging action, as described.

2. The combination of the wedging-lid B.

with the overhanging flange d, as set forth.

3. The combination of the wedginglid B, the overhanging flange b, and the rotating securing-spring (J, as described.
