SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,953, dated May '7, 1895.

Application filed January 12, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY WILLIAM EARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Earlton, in the county of I-larford and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Warmers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foot warmers, which are of a portable nature, and designed to hold hot water which surrounds the receptacle for the reception of the feet or hands, as the case may be, and to'provide a compartment for the reception of heatedwater and which serves to retain the heat in an inner compartment which comes in direct contact with the lining of the foot or hand receptacle.

A further object of the invention resides in the construction of a portable receptacle, made preferably of vulcanized rubber, and of such shape that it may be easily carried in a buggy or other conveyance, having compartments provided with suitable felt or other lining the said compartments being surrounded on all but the bottom sides with compartments adapted to hold hot water, suitable means for filling the interior of the box being provided.

The invention has for a further object the division of the hot water chamber into a series of chambers by means of partitions so placed as to serve as braces which prevent the sagging of the main walls, which, as the device is constructed of rubber, would occur, in case the partitions referred to were omitted.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which---' Serial No. 534,674. (No model.)

Figure l is a perspective view of the foot warmer with the top removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the box, made preferably of vulcanized rubber, and is provided with the handles B, and the interior of the box is divided crosswise by the partitions 0, and longitudinally by the partitions D, thus forming the compartments E, which have their bottoms disposed at an angle as seen in the sectional view of the drawings, there being a passageway F, through which water may pass from the end compartments to those running longitudinally behind the said compartments E, and having communication also with a channel between the parts E. G, G, are perforations through which water may pass from the said channel into the compartments E. Beneath the said inclined bottoms of the compartments E and the bottom of the box proper and the side partitions O, is thus formed the receptacle K, into which is inserted the foot or hand, as the case may be, through the apertures L. The interior of this receptacle K is lined with felt or a piece of cloth, or of any other suitable material Z.

At any suitable location communicating with the interior of the box, is the filling aperture M, having a valve N, made preferably in conical shape and having a turning button or wheel n.

In the drawings there are shown two receptacles or compartments for the reception of the feet, but if desired my warmers may be made having but one compartment. An es sential part of my invention, however, resides in providing a warmer in which hot water is utilized, which is held in compartments interposed between the receptacle holding the feet, and the outside partition of the box, and also means for holding a column of water on three sides of the compartment which holds the heated water directly above the receptacle designed to receive the feet, thereby causing the heat to be retained much longer in the re ceptacle E, than would otherwise be the case, were it not for the surrounding columns.

It will be seen that the partition walls which surround the apertures within which the feet are inserted, not only serve to securely hold the side walls of the hot water chamber against sagging, but they also serve to retain the heat imparted to them from the water, for

a great length of time, and thus render the device serviceable for a longer period of time 5 than if the partitions were omitted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to benew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a

10 foot warmer consisting of rubberbox A having the transverse partitions C and the longitudinal partitions D forming with the outside saaess walls of the box, communicating waterways, the compartmentahaving inclined bottoms E, and communicating with the said waterways 15 at G, the receptacle K having apertures L, and means for filling the waterways, all combined substantially as shown and described.
