UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALERIUS D. ANDERSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LETTER-SHEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 537,431, dated April 16, 1 895.
Application filed December 3, 1894. Serial No. 530,712. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALERIUs D. ANDER- sON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Sheets, of which the following is a specification. i
My invention relates to a combined writing sheet and advertising device, the advantages rndhnovelty of which will be hereinafter set ort view of my combined writing sheet and advertising device, and Fig. 2, a similar view with the upper advertising leaflet or tab turned back.
The object of my invention is to combine the letter sheet and advertising leaflets in such a manner as that the leaflets willalways be before the party to whom the letter is addressed.
A designates the letter sheet, which may be of any quality or style, and B indicates a series of lealiets or tabs secured to the upper end thereof. These leaflets may or may not be of the same texture or finish as the body of the letter sheet, as in some cases it may be desirable to have them dierent on account of the nature of the work to be placed thereon. Upon the outer leaflet is placedlthe usualletter head, sufficient space being left below to receive the date of the letter, and the name of the party to whom it is addressed, as shown in Fig. 1. The leaflets or tabs below this outer one contain cuts and descriptions of various machines, or in fact any advertisement which may be desired by the party. using the` paper. This may be readily seen upon reference to Fig. 2, wherein the upper leaet is shown turned upward or back, exposing the one next below to full view.
Of course the shape and style of the leaflets may be varied as desired; so too, the point and manner of attachment may be other than desirable.
The date and address being on a leaflet, the recipient of the letter will naturally preserve the same, and in so doing will keep the advertisements. Again, when the letter is folded, especially if it be folded longitudinally of the page, the lealiets have a tendency to dare apart, and in so doing the advertisement is In the drawings, Figure l is a perspectivel brought slightly in view, and the natural curiosity of the recipient may be relied upon in most cases to expose the balance.
The device may be produced in a very neat fashion, and I find from actual experience it forms a most valuable medium of advertislng. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. An advertising device comprising a writing sheet; a leaflet secured to the upper end of said sheet; and an advertisement beneath the leaflet; said leaflet containing a space for the usual letter head and being free to be turned up to display the advertisement, substantially as shown and described.
2. An advertising device comprising a writing sheet, and two or more leaflets secured to the sheet, and provided, respectively, with the usual letter head and advertisements; the uppermost leaflet, containing the letter head, being free to be turned up to display the advertisements on the lower leaflet or leaflets, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
VALERIUS D. ANDERSON.
