Description

no. 650,783. Patented May 29, I900.
T. P. MARTIN, m.
SHEET MUSIC.
(Application filed July 26, 1899.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. MARTIN, JR, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF HALF TO MARCUS P. EXLINE, OF \VAXAHACIIIE, TEXAS.
SHEET-MUSIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,783, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed July 26, 1899. Serial No. 725,155. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. MARTIN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Music and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sheet-music; and it consists in certain novel constructions and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of sheet-music constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same in an open condition, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sheet-music in a partly-folded condition.
Most sheet-music now placed on the market and which is designed to be sold at a popular price consists of one folded sheet and one loose sheet, making four pages of music. The objection to making music in this manner is that the single loose sheet is liable to fall out, which often occurs and causes considerable confusion and delay tothe performer. It is to overcome these objections and remedy these defects that my invention is designed.
A in the drawings represents a piece of sheet-music which is constructed from a single piece of material and folded twice, as at a a, which produces three leaves a a a which are printed in the usual manner with staffs, clefts, and notes, and, in the case of a song, with words. The music commences on leaf a which is numbered sheet 1, and continues over to sheet a which is numbered sheet 2, and then over to sheet a which is numbered 3, and then on to the back of the sheet a which is numbered sheet 4:. The outside of sheet a constitutes the front cover a of the sheet of music, upon which is printed the title of the song and the name of the composer, 850., as is' usual, and the back of the sheet a constitutes the back of the music, and which may be left plain or printed with any suitable advertising matter.
From the foregoing description it will be ap parent that sheet a can be folded inward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and by indicated in Fig. 2, and after the performer has sung from pages 1, 2, and 3,which can be seen without turning the sheet, he can then finish the piece of music by turning sheet a inward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2,
and the rest of the music will be found on the back of the last sheet.
So far as I am aware I am the first to produce as an improved article of manufacture sheet-music containing four pages having music printed thereon and a printed backcover, all constructed from a single piece of material.
If desired, the points at which the sheet of music is folded may be strengthened by suitable reinforcements of paper, linen, or other suitable material.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, to wit; sheet-music constructed from a single piece of material whichis folded at two points to form three leaves and four pages and a front and back, the music being printed upon three pages on one side of the sheet in regular order and designed to be numbered 1, 2 and 3, and the fourth page being formed by continuing the printing of the music in regular order on the other side of page designated 3, and designating it page 4, the leaf containing, pages 3 and 4, being adapted to be folded inwardly so as to bring to View music printed on page 4., the backs of pages 1 and 2 forming the front and back covers of the music, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
