BOOK-HOLDER AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,970, dated March 19, 1895.-

'in hotels and other public places, where it is desired to prevent the book from being removed or stolen, and to display advertising matter, but which also serves for offices and other private use; and myinvention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a stand having a revolving box top 2, with a central chamber or space 3. The bottom, section 4:, of the box top is pivoted at 5 to the supporting post 6. The upper section 7 of the top has a central aperture 8.
9 represents lugs secured at 10 to the under side of the top section 7.
11 represents leaves having pockets12 of proper dimensions to take in the cover of a book, said cover being firmly held in the pockets by means of screws 13 which pass through the material forming the pockets and through the cover.
14 represents lugs on the back of theleaves 11, said lugs being pivoted at 15 to the lugs 9.
By the abovedescribed means the book may be opened and remain open by its own Weight, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. III,or closed up and held closed by its own weight, as shown in full lines Fig. III and at the same. time remain firmly locked to the stand. As the book is closed it recedes partly through the aperture 8 into the chamber 3.
16 represents a skeleton frame surrounding the space the book occupies and covering the remaining portion of the top of the stand, said frame having a number of spaces 17 for holding advertising matter or other matter of information; the matter in said spaces being covered with glass 18 to protect the same.
I claim as my invention- 1. A combined book-holding and advertis in g device comprising a support, a top form ed with an upper section having a book-aperture, the pendent lugs secured to the under side of the upper section, the leaves having pockets for the reception of the book-covers, and lugs located on the backs of the leaves and pivoted to the pendent lugs, and the skeleton advertising frame secured to the upper section and having card spaces surrounding the book aperture; substantially as described.
2. A combinedbook-holding and advertising device comprising a stand having a revolving box-top formed with a central chamber, alower section, and an upper section hav ing a book-aperture, the supporting post to which the lower section is pivoted, the pendent-lugs secured to the under side of the upper section, the leaves having pockets for the reception of the book-covers and lugs located on the backs of the leaves and pivoted to the pendent lugs, and the skeleton advertising frame secured to the upper section and having card spaces surrounding the book-aperture; substantially as described.
