Description

UNITED STATES Patented August 11, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS WEGLEIN, JR., OFAPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILE R sleN Pos1'.
SPEQIFICATION'forming part of 4Letters Patent No. 736,181, dated August 11, 1903,v
` Application tiled March 14, 1903i Serial No. 147,697. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known Ithat I, LOUIS WEGLEIN, J r., a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mile or Sign Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in a mile or sign post which will indicate to the passer-by names of roads, the direction from various points, the direction ofthe Wind, and the time of day.
It further consists in employing the same as a letter-box.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a mile or sign post embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar numerals ofreference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a mile or sign postconsisting of a hollow body portion 2,the lower or bottom portion of which is open and is adapted to embrace the crib 8, which is buried in the ground and has the stop 19 thereon, against which the bottom of the body portion rests.
4 designates the top of the post, which is inclined and which has the projecting or overhanging edges 5 and the plug 6, which is situated within the body portion 2. Secured to said top 4: and plug dis a bar 7, to which is suitablyattached the strips 8, upon which `is placed the names of the roads or the adj acent towns, villages, &c., and' the distance therefrom, while above the bar? and resting thereon is the Weatherfvane 9, which is held in place by the pin 10,upon which is mounted the sun-dial 11, while above the same is the arrow12 to indicate the direction of the wind.
13 designates a box or receptacle situated within the body portion 2, to which access can be had through the doorV 14.1.,hinged or otherwise secured to the body portion 2, said door having the slot 15 for the insertion of a letter, package, dac., and the opening 17,which nisprovided with ashutter 2O in order that 18 designates a slipfpocket in the door 14,
the front of whichis provided with a glass 21, and within said receptacle can be placed a time-table or other suitable device, which can be seen through the glass 21. The crib 3 in the presentinstance abuts against the bottom of the box 13 and forms an additional support for the post. 1
From the above it will be understood that the post serves to indicate the direction in which the various localities surrounding the post are situated and the distance therefrom. At the same time the direction of the Wind is indicatedand the time of day, while the letter-box can be employed for the reception of mail or as a private letter-box. The body portion of the post can be employed to advantage as an advertising medium.
The shutter 20 is provided with a suitable inscription, such as ,Collect, so that when the receptacle is employed as a private mailbox the person depositing the contents in the box can movethe same so that the word Collect can be seen through the glass 22, it being understood that when there is nothing in the box the shutter is raised or placed so that the word Collect does not appear..
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come Within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combined mile or sign post and letterbox herein described comprising a hollow `body portion, meanswithin the lower end thereof for supporting the same, a receptacle within said body portion and supported upon said supporting means, a door for permitting access to said receptacle through said body portion, and indicating devices supported by said body portion and: extended beyond the upper end thereof.
