1 is a'side elevation of a letter WALTER E, Davis, or FrTHBURe, MASSACHUSETTS.
MAIL-Box.
Specification of Letters Patent. "appnqa'nbn nien January 2v, 1912. serial No. 673,818,
...To alllwhom it mag/concern:
Beit known that '1, WALTERE. Davis, a citizen of the United'- States residmg at Fitchbur in the county of Worcester and State of assachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in MailBoxes, of whichthe 'following is a-speci`cation.
Y This inventinfisfan improved mail box includingan inclined bottom plate .to-discharge mail by gravity 1 at one .end of the box, a door at said endof the box hinged at its l upper side, and Aalso including a casing at one side of the,v box having a display opening and a -movable indicating device in the casing, used .for indicating the time when the next collection of mail is to be made from .the letter boxand arranged to be appropriately setwhen the door is opened, the invention consisting in the construction, lcombination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure box constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the door closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, partly in section, and showing the door open. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of-the same. Fig is a horizontal sectional View of the same. Fig. 5 .is a detail perspective view ofthe door.
The mail box' 1, which may be of any suitable size` and shape, and which 4maybe made of any suitable material, is here shown as of oblong rectangular form, provided with aninclined or pitched top or roof 2 and also with a socket 3 on one side lwhereby the mail box ma be attached to a post or other support. n inclined bottom plat/e4, which'is preferably sheet metal, is arranged and secured in the lower side of the letter box md is adapted to discharge' mail by gravity, at
one end of the box through4 an opening 5. The said end of the hoxis also provided with an opening 6 through which mail may beplaced in the box and'there is a cover 7 for said opening, as at 8.
A door 9 is provided to close the opening 5 at the end of the box at which the inclined bottom plate 'disch'ar s. This door is hinged at its upper si e as at 10. At the vertical sides of the door are anges 11 'and 12 to partially overlap the `vertical sides'of the letterl box and et the lowereide of the door is atlan 13.
On one si e of the box, near that end hinged at its upper sidel 'thereof provided with theopening 5 isla casing 14 which forms a compartment which Patented De?. 31,1512.'
communicates with the interior of the box.VV
This casing has a display outer wall and is also provided with' a displayopening 16 in the said Wallbelow the opening 15. The said display openings are lazed and'in the vopening 16 is a suitable y s 'ide'.18 which is provided withV a legend indicatin when the last collection of. mail was maderom the box. Inthe casing 14.y is mounted a revoluble indicating disk`19' the opening 15 in its pivot of which is indicated at 20.` This in# 2 dicating disk is'infscribed with legends or numbers indicating the times of various collections 4of mail from the box,.-as at ,21,
therevbeinof a slide inscribed with the'legend such as lext collection indicatedl at '22, which is displayed also through the opening One edge of the indicating disk 19 projects beygond that side of the casing ltgwhich is' neare t the door 9, asindicated at 23, and
the flange 12 of the door is recessed as at 24 to receive that end of the casing and cover the same and to also receive and to cover .the
projecting edge 23 of the indicatin disk.- The door is provided with a suita le hasp 25 which, in connection with a staple 26' and.
a padlock 27 is employed for locking the door when the latter is closed. Any sultable means may, Within the scope of my invenltion be employed for locking the door, and Ildo not desire to be limited in this particku ar.
Whenthe door is closed,v the edge 23 of the disk 19v is protected andsaid disk can not be casuallytnrned. It is to be assumed that 'the disk at the last collection ofvmail was then set by the carrier 'to indicate the time of the next collection. When the door is opened, its lower Iside swings outwardly and upwardly from the opening 5 at one end of the mail box, and all the mail Ain the box is by gravity discharged by the inclinedV bottom plate4, outwardly through the said opening, thus obviating the necessity of the carrier putting his hand in the box in order to draw out `,the mail.l Havin thus obtained the mail, the carrier be ore closing and relooking the door, places one finger on the projecting edge 23 of the display disk 19 and turns the latter a'sulilcient distance to cause an appropriate inscription indicating the next collect-ion of mail to be dis# played thro'u h the opening 15 as will be understood. lllenos, anyone by glancing at the mail box can not only ascertain the time.`
of the last collection of mail from fthe slide displayed by the opening 16 but 4can also' ascertain from that portion of the', disk 191v which is displayed through the opening` the time when the next collection-J of mail' will be made from the box.
While I have hereinshown and .describe/d a. preferred embodiment of my "invention, I
vWould have it understood thatclianges may 20\ the box being;r further provided with a cas- "lying on the said side havin a display opening and also having a sli e opening at the endy against which the flange of the door closes, a revoluble indicatingr disk mounted in the casing projecting from the end thereof next to thedoor, so that when the door is closed the'v iange'closes against the ing, and a. revoluble indicating disk mounted.
in the casin/gf'and projecting;l fromthe end thereof next to the door so that when the door is closedthe recess in the flange there-A of forms a housing for the projecting p0rt-ion of theffindicating disk. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. l WALTER E. DAVIS. Witnesses:
