CALENDAR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILL G. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norwood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a monthly calendar adapted to be hung on the wall or other convenient position, which shall embody a tablet for memoranda which for the current month can be either retained in open sight as a reminder, or when desired can be readily and easily folded out of sight,

and in which the memoranda for each month can be retained permanently if desired without interference with the use of thecalendar. It is also the object of my invention to provide space for permanent information which at all times shall be readily accesible.

The foregoing advantages are accomplished by that certain novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed.

In the drawing which accompanies this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved calendar readyfor use.

Fig. 2 is a similar view, as in use for the current month, with the memorandum sheet displayed.

Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 8, 3, of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a prospective view of the calen dar, folded so as to conceal the memorandum sheets.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view, showing the calendar folded up for shipment.

The backing or support for the leaves of the calendar is formed of three similar sized sections of cardboard or other suitable ma terial 1, 2 and 3, which are secured or hinged together, preferably by flexible strips of adhesive tape 4:, 5, so that the sheets of cardboard can be readily folded on each other. While I prefer to use flexible tape, of course any other suitable method of securing the cardboard backing together can be employed,

or the entire back of the calendar can be.

formed of material that will readily fold on the lines indicated.

Mounted along the lower edge ofthe mlddle portion of the backing issecured a narrow shelf or ledge preferably of cardboard 6, provided with a front flange 7 to serve as a very shallow pocket of sufiicient depth to hold theseparate sheets 8, upon which is printed the calendar for each month. A similar'overhanging shelf 9 with a depending flanged portion 10 is provided for the upper edge of the monthly calendar sheets, so that the sheets will be held securely in position, but at the termination of each month the sheet for the previous month may be withdrawn.

For a memorandum sheet for the first month, I provide a front sheet 11, upon the front of which any desired information can be printed, for instance, weather forecast for the year, and this sheet before the calendar is put into use forms the topmost sheet for the monthly calendar.

The front sheet 11 and the monthly calendar sheets 8 are permanently secured together and to the calendar backing by flexible cords 12, 12, upon which the calendar sheets are strung at the lower edge, with the cord passed through openings near the lower edge of the middle section 2 and the upper edge of the lower section 3 of the calendar backing. This provides a method of mounting the calendar sheets loosely so that they can be lifted off and allowed to drop down in reverse position with each succeeding month.

On the reverse side of the top sheet 11 I arrange for memorandum space for each day of the first month, and on each of the monthly sheets I arrange for a similar memorandum of the succeeding months, and if it is desired to have the memorandum before the user at all times, the sheets are allowed to remain exposed, as shown in Fig. 2. In the event, however, that it is desired to conceal the memoranda, the lower section of the backing 3 can be folded upwardly behind the middle section 2, carrying with it the memorandum sheets that are already in position, and only the calendar for the month will be disclosed.

The front of the lower section 3 of the backing will be convenient for the printing thereon of any desired permanent information, such as a condensed yearly calendar for the previous "and succeeding years, and Where the calendar is intended for farms, a breeding table for stock can be given, or any other desired information thatmay be of daily use throughout'the year.

When the lower section 3 of the backing, with the sheets already in place, is folded back, the weight of the calendar as it is suspended from the wall, will hold this portion in position behind the-middle section.

The upper section 1 of the calendar backing can be used-for advertising purposes, or for pictorial illustrations as desired.

Moreover the-three sections of the calendar can be folded together asindicated in Fig. 5,forming a very convenient and compact package for shipment.

Having' thusdescribed my invention,- what '-I claim as new and desire to seeure by- Letters Patent, is

1. in a 'cale'ndar,-'-a back therefor comprising aplurality of foldable sect-ions, a series of separate calendar sheets,with means for detach-ably 5 holding them on one of the sections of the back, and cords secured to said section upon which the-calendar sheets are permanently secured in "loose condition, whereby 1 the sheets may i be utilized for L a monthly calendar on the front side and for memoranda on the reverse side.

2. In a calendar, a back therefor comprising three sections adapted to fold on each other, a series of separate calendar sheets, with means for detachably holding them on the middle section, and cords secured between the middle and lower sections upon which the calendar sheets are permanently secured in loose condition, whereby the sheets may be utilized for a monthly calendar on the front side and for memoranda on the reverse side and the memoranda folded behind the calendar section.

3. In a calendar, at back therefor, of a plurality of sections adapted to fold on each other, a series of separate calendar sheets, with alianged ledge along the upper and lower edges of one of the sections for receiving'and holding detaehably the separate calendar sheets, cords secured to the adjacentfoldable sections at the bottom of the supporting ledge upon which the calendar sheets are permanently secured in loose condition, whereby the sheets may be utilized for a monthly calendar on the front side and for memoranda on the reverse side.
