16 Claims. (Cl. 40-120) This invention relates to an article of manufacture of the kind for supporting calendar pads, photographs and the like, for display purposes, and has for its objects to provide a structure which embodies means for displaying a calendar pad, means for displaying a photograph, picture, or the like and, in addition, normally concealed index and memoranda areas and, in certain instances, a pocket or pockets for receiving memoranda during a calendar month in the form of au envelope which optionally may be detached for disposal or mailing.
As herein illustrated, the article comprises a support having transversely hinged, rigid upper and lower panel sections, means hinged to the lower edge of the lower section, adapted to stand upwardly from the hinge line in contact with the front face of the lower section, or to hang downwardly therefrom to form an extension thereof, and means carried by the upper section, a portion of which projects downwardly across the hinge between the sections, so as to overlap a portion of the first means when the latter is disposed upwardly against the front lhinge so as to expose a calendar pad disposed in the The opposite side of the pocket panel bears a pocket. ruled memoranda sheet which forms an extension of a similar sheet applied to the front face of the lower panel section. Alternatively, the hinged means may comprise two or more pocket elements in the form of envelopes swingable successively downwardly and, when in said downwardly swung position, having their open ends at the top. In one form the front face of the downwardly swung envelope bears a calendar representing the current month and the front face of the upstanding envelope bears the calendar of the preceding month. The envelope is adapti,
ed to receive memoranda and may be detached for disposal or mailing. The means on the front face of the upper panel section may be n the form of a face board and may be spaced from the upper section by a spacer and having a window opening through it for reception of a photograph, picture or the like. A hanger is associated with the upper section of the support by means of which it may be suspended from a wall hook and-optionally a leg and brace may be provided at the back of the support, so that the latter may be supported in an upright position from a table or desk.
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the article showing the upper section provided with a face board containing openings for reception of a photograph and a thermometer,
- and the lower section carries a pocket section for reception of a calendar pad;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1, as seen from the right side;

Fig. 5 is an edge view greatly enlarged, taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. l, in which a spacer board is situated behind the face board of the upper section;
Fig. 6 is a corresponding edge view of a modified structure in which no spacer board is employed between the face board and the upper section;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a modification of the article in which the upper panel section of the support has an extension and the lower panel section supports a plurality of pockets in the form of envelopes;
Fig. 8 isa plan view of the article shown in Fig. 7 with one of the envelopes swung downwardly;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the article shown in Fig. 7 with the extension of the upper panel section swung upwardly and one of the envelopes swung downwardly;
Fig. l0 is an edge view of Fig. 9 as seen from the right side;
Fig. 1l is a fragmentary View of a modied form in which the envelopes are detachably connected; and
Fig. l2 is an edge view of the article shown in Fig. 7 provided with a supporting leg and brace, the pocket and face board being omitted.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. l and 2, the article 1t) comprises a rear support 12 having upper and lower panel sections 14 and 16 hinged transversely at 18 so that the panel sections may be bent relative to each other. As is customary in the art, the upper and lower sections are made of stiff paperboard which are covered at the front and back with a facing paper, the latter being folded over the edges to impart a finished appearance thereto. The facing paper, crossing from one panel to the other, constitues the hinge 18 between the sections.
A pocket panel 20 is connected along its lower edge to the lower edge of the lower panel section 16 by a hinge 22, this hinge also being constituted by facing paper which may, in fact, be a continuation of that applied to the sections 14 and 16. The pocket section 20 is foldable on its hinge to an upstanding position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in contact with the front face of the lower panel 16, which is its normal position, or may be swung downwardly about the hinge 22 so as to depend therefrom and to form an extension of the lower panel sec- `tion 16, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The pocket section 20 contains a window opening 24 (Fig. l) for receiving a calendar pad, the opening being located at that side of the pocket section which faces outwardly from the support when it is folded upwardly. The back side of the pocket section has applied to it a ruled sheet of paper 26 which may be a continuation of a sheet applied to the front face of the lower panel section 16 for receiving memoranda, telephone numbers and the like.
A face board 28 is mounted on the upper panel section 14 and the lower edge or margin '30' of the face board extends across the hinge 18 and laps over the upper edge of the pocket panel 20 (Figs. 2 and 5), so that when the panel sections 14 and 16 lie in a straight line the edge 30, by engagement with the upper edge of the pocket section 20, holds the latter engaged with the lower panel section 16 with the calendar pad exposed for viewing. The face board 28 may be perfectly plain and have advertising material printed thereon, or it may contain one or more openings 32 and 34 for receiving a photograph or picture and a thermometer. In this particular form a spacer board 36 is disposed between the face board 28 and the upper section 14 in known manner to provide depth for receiving the photograph and thermometer and also to space the face board forwardly of the upper panel section 14 by the thickness of the pocket section 20, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, so that when the lower edge of the face board overlaps the upper edge of the pocket section, the upper and lower sections of the support will `lie in a common plane.
lf desired, the spacer board 36 may beomitted lparticularly if the `face board is to be used 'only for -receiving adver-tising matter, as shown in Fig. 6. When thus constructed, the lower panel section 16 will be displaced rearwardly of the upper panel section 14 by engagement of the lower edge of 'the face board 28 with the upper edge of the pocket section 2.0, the flexibility fof `the hinge 18 permitting this 'without diiculty.
The front or -face board 28 has at :its top an upwardly projecting hanging tab 38 containing an aperture 40, by means of which the-article may be suspended on a wall hook.
A modication of the article, is shown in Figs. 7 to l1, having a backing support l2-comprised of upper and lower sections 44 and 46, connected by a transverse hinge 48. One or more 'pocket members 50 (-Fig. l0) are connected at their edges to the lower edge of the lower section 46, for example by hinge elements 52, so that these pocket sections 50 may stand upright against the front face of the lower panel section 46, or be swung successively from an upright position, one after another, to a downwardly extending position, such as shown in Fig. 8. Normally the pocket sections are held upright by a face board 54 mounted on the upper panel section 44, the lower marginal edge 56 of which overlaps the hinge 4S and the upper edges Vof the pocket sections 59. Each pocket section 50 has an opening 58 yon that side which faces outwardly when the section is hanging downwardly as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the opening being located at the top with respect to their position in Fig. 8, so that memoranda slips and small articles, such as pencils or Vthe like, may be placed therein. The front face of the pocket rnay bear a calendar sheet 60 of the current month and, if so, the face of the succeeding pocket 50, which faces outwardly, has on ita calendar sheet 62 of the preceding month. The first of the pockets to be folded downwardly preferably has on its exposed surface some such legend as a lSeasons Greetings, as shown in Fig. 7.
In this particular model the face board 54 has an extension panel 64 connected to its upper edge by a hinge 66 so that it may be folded upwardly therefrom, as shown in Fig. 9. The front face f the front board 54 and the rear face of the extension 64 overlying it, have applied to them a ruledsheet 68 for memoranda and/or telephone numbers.
As in the previous articles, there may be openings for receiving a picture or a thermometer and there is allanging tab 70 by means of which it may be suspended from a wall hook. As shown in Figs. 7 to 10 the pocket sections 50 may be detached and thrown away as successive calendar sheets expire. Fig. `l1 shows a modification in which the pockets are in the form of mailing envelopes 72 in which case they willthave a gurnmed flap 74, and may optionally have on one side a preprinted address and on the other a notation of the date upon which piece should bemailed.
While the article, as illustratedin the preceding figures, is primarily adapted to kbe Vsuspended on the wall from a wall hook, a leg and brace may be provided, as shown in Fig. l2, for supporting it on a at surface.
As shown, the leg and brace '76 l'and 78 may be attached or cut out of the panel sections'and are engageable in suitable manner to hold the leg'distended rearwardly from the support.
In each form of the invention the pocket section, whether it is for a lcalendar `pad orin the form of a storage pocket or mailing envelope, `or whether it is merely an extension to vprovide for additional memoranda,
is supported for swinging movement from an upright position engaged with the front face of the lower section where it is normally held by the lower marginal edge of the face board attached to the upper panel section to a suspended position forming an extension of the lower end of the lower panel section. Engagement and disengagement of the lower edge of the front board with the upper edge of the pocket section is elfected by bending the upper and lower sections rearwardly relative to each other.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
