`PACKING-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters.Ilatent No. 532,557, dated January 15, 1895. Application lednly 16, 1394. serai No. 517,661. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Brighton, Richmond county, New York, have invented vcertain new` and useful Improvements in Packing-Hooks, of which the plish this by means of the peculiar shape' which I give to the hook itself, as hereinafter described.
The invention will be best .understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the hook; Fig. 2, a front view; Fig. 3, across-section of the hook, and Fig. 4 an enlarged perspective view of the hook proper.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the entire hook; B, the handle, and C the hook proper, composed -of a single piece of iron orsteel.
In general form the hook proper is somewhat similar in shape to an ordinary crochet needle, but it is provided with a sharp lance point, e, at the end, and the edge of the hook is out off as shown in Fig. 4, so as .to provide the triangular surface, d, d', d2, upon the front edge of the hook. At the same time, a heel or shoulder his provided, the object of which is to prevent the hook, upon insertion in the packing and after being turned, from being removed. y
In using the hook itis simply pushed or drawn into the packing, into which it readily enters, as. the edge e is sharp. It is then turned or twisted around through a right angle, and'in this way the line d d2 on the one side and the shoulder h engage firmly against the fiber of the packing, and it will be found imp'ossible to remove the hook. Upon pulling upon the hook, the hook and the packing will both'be pulled out of the space together.
To remove the hook f1\om the packing, all that is necessary is to turnthe hook to its original position and theirturn it over, as if hinged on the line d d', in the same manner as an ordinary crochet needle 's removed from the Wool.
I claim as my invention- A packing hook, C, for removing packing, having -at its extreme edge alance point e, and provided with the flat surface d d d2 and the heel Or. shoulder h.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1894. v Y i CHARLES P. HOFFMAN. Witnesses: l
C. H. LUDINGTON, J r., WILLARD PARKER BUTLER.
