SURGICAL KNIFE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUioI CAs'rnAoANn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Surgical Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to surgical knives and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein the blade may be easily and quickly applied and removed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a surgical knife with a removable blade, the structure being such that the operator may see the fastening means which holds the blade in place while applying and removing the blade.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side View of a surgical knife disclosing an embodiment of the invention;

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing how the base of the blade is held in place.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a handle, which may be of any desired construction, as, for instance, metal. The handle 1 merges into a bifurcated sec tion 2 and a bifurcated back 3. The section 2 and back 3 merge together and are open at the bottom and front. These parts are substantially U-shaped in cross section, as shown in Figures 3 and a, whereby a blade receiving slot or socket is provided for receiving the blade 4. A stop, as, for instance, the pin 5, is carried by the sectlon 2, and a stop 6 is carried by the outer end of back 2, said stop being preferably a. reduced turned over end of the extension 7 of back 3. The stop 6 has been shown round but it might be of other shape if desired. Preferably this stop acts as a retaining pin and is preferably very small. As indicated in Figure 4, the stop 6 extends through the blade 4c and beyond the same for only a very short distance. If desired, the stop 6 could extend flush with the surface of the blade 1. As indicated particularly in Figure 5, the blade at is provided with an aperture 8 for receiving the stop 6 and with a notch 9 for accommodating the stop 5. Preferably the notch 9 is formed with a rounded end 10 of greater diameter than the pin 5 whereby when the blade 4, is flexed to one side so as to disengage the same from the stop 6, the blade may be either swung downwardly from the position shown in Figures 1 and 5 or may be pulled in a straight line outwardly away from handle 1. However, when the blade 4 is in position, it preferably snugly fits over the stop 6 and the back of the blade against the back 3, as shown in Figure 5, while the end preferably fits against the end wall 12. By this arrangement, the blade is held fairly rigidly in place while permitting a quick and easy removal. When removing the blade, the same is grasped by one of the fingers and the thumb at about point 13. The blade is then flexed away from the extension 7 until the stop 6 has been disengaged. When this has been done, the blade may be easily removed by a quick pull away from the handle 1 or by downward swinging movement. By removing the blade in this manner, the hand will not come in contact with the edge of the blade, even if the hand should slip. It will be understood that the handle 1 may be made of any desired material, while the blade 4: is made preferably of a good grade of steel and ismade sufficiently flexible to be flexed to one side to a sufiicient extent to be disengaged from the stop 6.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A surgical knife comprising a handle provided with a U-shaped end section merg ing into a socket section, said end section having one of its sides formed with an extension provided with a turned over reduced portion acting as a pin, and means extending through said socket section acting as a stop, and a flexible blade formed with a notch at one end and an aperture inter mediate its length, said a ert-ure being adapted to accommodate sari pin and said notch being adapted to accommodate said stop when the blade is fitted into said socket section and U-shaped section.

2. A surgical knife, comprising a handle provided with a U-shaped end section merging into a socket section, said end section having one of its sides formed with an extension, a pin extending from said extension, means extending into said socket section acting as a stop, and a flexible blade formed with a notch at one end and an aperture intermediate its length, said aperture being; adapted to accommodate said pm and said' notch being adapted to accommodate said stop when the blade is fitted into the end section and socket section.

3. A surgical knife, comprising a handle provided with an end section substantially U-shaped in cross section, said handle-being rm d. w th va socket n l w th he Qpening in said'end section, a pin extending hlqu lla il, s e t tent albi eentmlla f thereof, said end section having a forwardly projecting extension, a pin extending laterally from said extension, and a flexible blade formed with a substantially V-shaped notch at the end, :and an aperture intermediate its length, said notch being adapted to accommodate the pin in the socket when the knife is in operative position and said aperture being adapted to accommodate the pin earried by said extension.
