Description
(No Model.) J KOZMANN SURGICAL KNIFE. No. 370,706. Y Patented Sept. 27, 14887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOHANN KOZMANN, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
SURGICAL KNIFE.
'l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,706, dated September 2'7, 1887.
` Application filed July 14, 1887. Serial No. 244,295. (No model.)
To alt whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, J OHANN KOZMANN, a subject ofthe Emperor of Austria, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical Knives, of which the following is a specilication.`
This invention relates to improvements in knives or cutting-instruments; and the object of the invention is to enable said instruments to be readily and safely applied to use.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife in its guard. Fig.'2 is aside elevati-on of a knife, the parts being in somewhat different position from that shown in Fig. l. -Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side view similar to Fig. l, parts being removed. Fig. 5 is a section of part of a handle in the plane w w, Fig. 4.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letters A A indicate a handle composed of two parts or plates, and having a pivot, B. About the pivot Bv swing the instruments G D, which may be a file, a pair of scissors, or other instrument. Springs F tend to hold the vinstruments C D, as also the knife-blade G, in their closed position shown in Fig. l. Guards E are provided for the instruments C D. The knife-blade G is adapted to swing about the pivot B and to rest in the guard H, which guard is formed of two parts, between which the blade can be made to rest. The guard H is readily formed Y by continuing the handle parts or plates A A.
When the blade G rests in the position shown in Fig. l, said blade can be used for such purposes as cutting corns or bunions. The corn or bunion can be caused to rest in the guard H and close to the cutting-blade G, and by then moving the cutting-blade toward the corn or bunion the latter can be cut,whi1e at the same time the guard H protects the operator against the blade G.
When it is desired to use the point of the blade, the adjusting device or pin K is moved in the slot I in one of the handle parts A. By moving said adjusting device in the direction of the arrow shown near the same in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, said device will act on an inclined edge of the blade G orof the shank of said blade, so as to swing said blade about the pivot B and against the resistance of the spring F, which acts on the blade G, until said blade rests with its point exposed, as indicated in Fig. 2 in broken lines. Said point can then be used for performing any suitable operation.
As the guard H not only protects the operator against the blade G, but also prevents the blade G from cutting 'too deep, said device can be used in various delicate operations-such for example, as cutting certain tumors, tonsils, and for other operations.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the handle and the guard, said guard being made in two parts, of a knife-blade situated between the two parts of the guard, a pivot made to pass through the handle and the shank of the blade, and au adjusting device made to act upon the knifeblade or its shank, substantially as set forth.
.2. The combination, with the handle and the guard, said guard being made in two parts, of aspring-impelled knife-blade situated between the two parts of the guard, a pivot made to pass through the handle and the shank of the blade, and au adjusting device made to act upon the knife-blade or its shank against the action of said spring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myV hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHANN KOZMANN. [n s] Vitnes-ses:
W. C. HAUFF, W. HAUFF.
