ALBERT L.- HieeiNaoF'BAR HARBOR, MAINE.
BLAcKlNe-Box HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,375, dated January 8, 1895.
'Application tiled March 3, 1894.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. HIGGINS, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Bar Harbor, in the county-of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in blacking boxholders.
The object, of the present invention is to provide a simple and exceedingly inexpensive blacking box holder, which will possess great strength and durability, and which will enable a box of blacking to be securely clamped and held in convenient position for use, and which will permit an empty box to be readily detached and a full box to be quickly applied.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illus-V trated in the accompanying drawings and pointedv out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blacking box holder constructed in accordance with this invention, a blacking box being applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the blacking box being removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.A Fig. Il is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the clamping jaws and the connecting bolt. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the guides.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the igures of the draw- 1, designates a circular head or body provided with a handle 2, and having iiat upper and lower faces and vertical side edges, and provided with a transversely disposed bore or opening 11, in which is located a connecting bolt 10, adapted to force clamping jaws 3, into engagement with the sides of a blacking box 7. The clamping jaws 3,' are L-shaped, having straight lower portions 4, arranged fiat against the lower face ofthe body or head l; and the upward extending portions 5, are arranged hat against the .ver-
sain No. 502,253. (No model.)
by this construction it will be seen that the body supports the L-shaped clamping jaws, and the latter are not liable to be readily broken or otherwise injured. v
v The L-shaped clamping jaws are further supported by guides 8, depending from the lower face of the circular head or body and preferably consisting of rectangular staples, which are driven into the head or body, the latter being preferably made of wood. The horizontal or lower portions 4, of the L-shaped clamping jaws are disposed transversely of the head or body and the depending rectangular keepers 8, are located adjacent to the side edges of the said head or body and are disposed longitudinally of the saine.
The bolt is provided at one end with a head. Its other end is threaded and has arranged on the latter a thumb nut 12; and the vertical portions 5, of the L-shapedclamping jaws are provided with openings 9, registering with the transverse bore or opening of the head or body and receiving the clamping bolt. By turning the thumb nut and screwing the same inward on'the bolt, the L- shaped clamping jaws will be moved inward and caused to clamp the blacking box.
The vertical portions 5, of the clamping jaws, extend slightly above the upper'face of the head or body, and these projecting prtions 'have inward extending spurs 6, disposed at an inclination and adapted to engage the oppositesides of a blacking box, and to tightly clampthe same. The arrangement of the spurs tends to vtorce the blacking box tightly against the upper face of the head or body, and they are disposed in pairs adjacent to the opposite side edges of the jaws.
It will be seen that the blacking box holder is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it possesses great strength and durability, and that the jaws may be readily separated to release an empty black--l ing box, or be moved together to clamp an'- other box, and that the L.-shaped clamping jaws conform to the exterior configuration of the circular head or body.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction maybe resorted l of rectangular form, depending from the lower face of the body and arranged adjacent to the opposite sides thereof, the transversely disposed approximately L-shaped clamping jaws having their dat lower portions arrangedon the lower face of the body and fitting in the depending guides, the vertical portions of the jaws being arranged against the opposite side edges of the body and projecting above the upper face of the same and provided with inward extending spurs, `and having openings arranged at the terminals of the opening of the body and registering with the same, a transverse bolt passing through said openings and provided at one end with ahead for engaging the adjacent jaw and having its other end extended and threaded, and a nut arranged on the extended end of the bolt and engaging the other jaw, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. HIGGINS.
