OTIS J. MERRITT, OF SENEAGUOTEEN, IDAHO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN J. COSTELLO, OF OOEUR DALENE, IDAHO.
COUPLING-BLOCK FOR SPROCKET-CHAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,550, dated June 23, 1896. Application filed February 19, 1896. Serial No. 579,893. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTIS J. MERRITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seneaguoteen, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooupling- Blocks for Sprocket-Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in coupling-blocks for sprocket-chains, and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap block link-coupling readily applied and which when once applied cannot become separated or disconnected. I make the link in two parts, so that it may be readily separated when it is desired to remove the chain.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my block link-couplin g with the parts separated. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts connected. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinalsection through Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one portion of the coupling-link, which has a transverse opening Ct for the reception of the rivet to connect it with the adj acent-link of the chain, and upon its other face, which is formed on a bevel'or taper, as shown, there is formed, extending from the upper face downward, a substantially T-shaped slot b, which, however, does not extend through the opposite face, but leaves a portion 19 upon which the T-shaped tenon of the other part is adapted to rest, so as not to give way where it comes in contact with the sprocket.
O is the other part of the coupling having a transverse passage 0 for the reception of parts are mounted and the screw turned up sufficiently tight a portion of its head will overlap the T-shaped projection or tenon and prevent vertical displacement thereof. The
two parts A and B are rounded or concaved upon their under sides, as seen at f, where they come next to the wheel.
In practice, the chain is placed over the sprocket-wheel with the concavecl side next to the wheel, the screw being turned so that its fiat side will come next to the slot, then the two ends of the chain are brought together and then the tenon or projection D may be slipped into the T-shaped slot of the part A and pushed down until it bears upon the wall at the bottom of the slot, then the screw is tightened so as to bring the round side of its head over the projection or tenon D, which prevents the parts from separating or sliding out when the chain is slack. The bevel or taper of the adjacent faces prevents separation when there is a tension on the chain.
Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A block link-coupling for sprocket-chains comprising a half-link having a T- shaped vertically-disposed slot and a corresponding half-link having a T-shaped projection fitted to said slot, substantially as described.
2. A block link-couplin g for sprocket-chain s comprising a half-link having a T-shaped verticallydisposed slot and a corresponding halflink having a T-shaped projection fitted to a head'adapted to engage over said projection, the adjacent faces being beveled, the said slot having a bottom Wall upon which the projection rests, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTIS J. MERRITT.
