CLEAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY P. HEDRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cleats, the object of the invention being to provide a cleat for conveyer chains or endless carriers, the said cleat being of such construction as to adapt it to be readily applied to and firmly connected to the desired link of a chain and as easily detached therefrom when required.
With the above general object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a. plan view of a portion of a chain, showing right and left hand links connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the cleats, showing the detachable section thereof slightly removed.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a chain having the usual open center links and Q the main body or section of the cleat contemplated in this invention. The cleat may be formed of any suitable material and resembles an ordinary channel iron with the exception of one side thereof which is preferably corrugated or fluted longitudinally as shown at 3. The other side of the cleat comprises the marginal flanges extending lengthwise of the opposite edges thereof, said flanges being indicated at t and having the inner faces thereof reversely beveled as shown at 5. rlhe end portion of the cleat is also cut away as shown at 6 to receive the detachable section 7.
The detachable cleat section 7 resembles the main section in its general shape but is provided with reversely beveled shoulders 8 adapted to meet and bear against the shoulders 5 of the main section so that when the two sections are drawn tightly together, the beveled shoulders thereof will wedge into place and Specification of Letters Patent.

The sections are secured together by a fastener 9 which may either be in the form of a bolt or rivet, said fastener' passing through holes l0 andll in the sections of the cleat as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The detachable section also comprises the oppositely arranged marginal flanges 12 which form continuations of the flanges 4l of the main section but` which terminate at their inner extremities a sufhcient distance from the corresponding extremities of the flanges 4f to admit the adjacent side bar 13 of the chain link in a manner clearly shown in Fig. 2. After the main section has been inserted through the apertured bar of the chain link to the position shown in Fig. 2, the detachable section 7 is then applied to the main section and bolted or otherwise riveted thereto as shown in Fig. 2, the detachable section 7 then acting as a stop to prevent separation between the cleat and the chain. This forms a. firm, reliable and positive engagement between the cleat and the chain and also adapts the cleat to be detached readily from the chain without mutilation thereof.
I claim A cleat adapted for attachment to chains comprising a main section or body provided with marginal longitudinal flanges having reversely beveled inner surfaces and undercut to form stop shoulders, a detachable end section comprising a body also provided with corresponding marginal flanges extending in planes parallel with the plane of the body and of less length than the undercut portions of the first-named flanges, said. end section also having beveled shoulders uniting the flanges and body and which meet the beveled surfaces of the main body, and means for fastening the bodies together in such manner as to include a portion of a chain between the opposite shoulders fthereof.
