BOX-STRAP.

To allie/matt may concerne i Be it known that I, GRANT G, GARD, a citizen of the United States, residino1 at Overton, in the county of Dawson and btate ot Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for securing the fastenings of wooden packing` boxes or cases by means of metal straps, in a manner to permit of the strap being removed and again secured to the same or another box or case.

The invention contemplates novel means for securing the strap around the box, the said means providing for tighteningr the strap upon the box at the same time that 1t secured thereon.

The invention therefore consists of a bar or lever pivotally secured to one end of the strap and provided with spaced elongated openings which are adapted ior removable engagement when the bar is at an angle to the strap, with the elongated element 1n the form of a stud or rivet, the said stud or rivet being held against removal within the openings when the bar is alined with the strap. The swinging of the bar into ahnement with the strap acts as a lever and serves to tightly bind the strap around the box or case, the bar being held in such alinement by a band movable along the strap and engageable over the end of the bar. Means are also provided for preventing the accidental removal of the band, which consists of a nail or other pointed and headed ele `nient driven into the box and passing through the opening in the band and engaging the notch in the bar.

In the drawings there is illustrated one end of a packing case or box, such as is com* monly employed for the shipment of eggs, although it is understood that the invention is susceptible ot' various uses, :t'or example, it may be used as a substitute forleather straps upon trunks or as an emergency barrel hoop, or for various other purposes.

Secured around the packing case is a strap 10, preferably formed of thin metal and of a length to pass entirely around the box and slightly overlap when secured in position thereon. One end of this strap has pivoted thereto as shown at 11 a bar 12 of relatively heavy material, this bar serving as a lever as will be hereinafter apparent.

T he bar 12 has formed therein a plurality of elongated openings 13, preferably elliptical in form and spaced apart as shown. 1While there is illustratedfive of such openings, it isV obvious that any suitable number may be employed. The openings 13 are designed tor engagement with a stud or rivet 14: secured to the opposite end of the strap 10, this stud or rivet being spaced from the bottom face ot the said strap and being provided with a head 15 of substantially the same shape as the openings 13, so that it may be inserted in any one of these openings.

VVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the head 15 may be` placed within any of the openings 13, the bar 12 entering the space formed between the head and the strap 10. When in this position the bar 12 may be utilized as a lever and by swinging around into alinemcnt with the end of the strap to which it is secured, thereby tighteir ing the band upon the case and preventing the head 15 from passing through the openw ing 13.

The bar 12 is provided at the end opposite the pivot 11 with an opening 16, which when the bar is positioned over the strap l0 is adapted to register with the opening 17 formed in the said band and when in this position a flat headed nail or screw may be inserted into these openings in the packing case to hold the bar against lateral movement.

of the nail or screw, the strap 10 has slidably mounted thereon a band 18, which is adapted to engage over the end of the bar 12 and cover the head of the before mentioned nail or screw. The band 18 is provided with

19 and 20, disposed out of alinement7 these openings being adapted to register With a notch 21 formed in the strap 10, when the said band is in position. The bar 12 is provided with an additional opening 22, Which is adapted to aline with the openings 19 Vand 20 of the notch 21, so that by driving a nail 23 or other suitable sharp instrument into the packing ease thel band 18 will be held against movement.

t is believed that from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes in the form and proportion thereof as Will fall Within the scope of the claim hereto appended.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is:

A device of the class described embodying' a metal strap, a bar having one end positively pivoted to one end of the strap, said bar being provided with elongated apertures intermediate its ends, a laterally extending stud carried by the opposite end of the strap, an elongated head positioned upon the outer end of the stud for removableengagement with said apertures when the bar iS swung at an angle to the strap and held against removal when the bar is alined With said strap and means for holding' the bar in alinenient.
