Application led May 13, 1921. Serial No. 469,161. f
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that. I, THOMAS C.,` linnn woR'rI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cornish, county of York, State of Maine, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combination Reenlorcements and Fasteners, of which lthe following is a specilication.
This invention relates `to a Vcombination ping packages, and is particularly intended for use with the egg case of standard commercial type.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive reinforcing fastener which while reliably securing the cover of the shipping case and effectively reinforcing the case, may be readily locked and unlocked as occasion requires.
This object, together with certain other features of advantage, issecured in the device of the present invention. The construction and operation of my reinforcing fastener is described and illustrated in the accompanying specification and drawings, and the characteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Throughout the specification and drawings, like reference characters are` correspondingly employed, and in the drawings:
ig. l is an end view of an egg case equipped with a reinforcing :fastener in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section.
For the purposes of this application I shall discuss my invention in its adaptation to a shipping case for eggs, although it will be understood that such treatment is purely illustrative and in no way limiting.
I have accordingly indicated at l an egg case of standard type and at 2 the cover therefor.
My combination reenforcement and fas tening member consists of clamping-strip 3 of suitable material which is carried around the bottom and side walls of the case, being attached thereto as indicated at 4, and across the cover 2 of the case.
The ends of the band 3 are carried upwardly over and around a pair of bearing blocks 5 and 5 which are adapted to rest on the cover 2 in spaced relation to each other, and are secured to said blocks as indicated at 6.
The blocks 5 and 5 preferably have protect-ive coverings 7 i and 7 of sheet metal, tin or `other suitable material fastened thereto, and their outer` uncovered endsare preferably beveled, as indicated at S, so that lthe ends ofthe flexible band may be carried conveniently `upwardly onto the top faces of the blocks, around the inner ends thereof,
. and along the 4bottom faces of the blocks. reenforcement and cover fastener for ship- The ends of the fieXible band 3 are adapted to be detachably connected with each other by a locking member comprising, as here shown, a threaded bolt 9, the head l0 of which is lodged between the cover 7 for the block 5 and the inner end of said block itself. The opposite end of the bolt 9 is threaded as indicated at 4l0, and passes through the cover 7 of the opposite block and into a bore 52 tapped into said block. Preferably a bearing piece 11 is secured between the inner face of said cover 7 and the inner end of block 5 and is tapped and threaded as shown to receive said bolt.
Fast on the bolt 9 is a wing nut l2 by means of which the blocks may be drawn towards each other to tighten the band 3. lf necessary, the upper face of the cover 2 between the blocks 5 and 5 may be recessed as indicated at 13 to permit the nut 12 to turn freely on the bolt 9.
ln use, the cover 2 is fastened by entering the threaded end l0 of the bolt 9 into t-he bore 52 of block 5 and turning the nut l2 in the proper direction to draw the blocks toward each other, thereby tightening the flexible band 3.
The cover is released by backing oli the nut 12, thereby permit-ting the blocks to separate.
Inasmuch as the blocks are fastened to the band, and the head of the bolt 9 is' reta-ined between the cover 7 and the block 5, there is no liability of either the blocks or the bolt becoming lost when the clamp is released.
By this construction. the usual hinges and loclr for the cover may be dispensed with.
lt will also be noted that the head and threaded end of the bolt 9 are set through the ends of the strip 3 itself see Fig. 3) so that the strip is thereby additionally fastened to the blocks when the fastener is tightened.
Various modications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be resorted to all without departing from the spirit of mvv-*invention `if Within the limits of the appended claims. t
What I therefore desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y t
l. A hand fastener Consisting of a pair of oppositely disposed spaced hearing blocks to which ends of the band are fastened, covering for said blocks, a bolt having its head lodged betweenl the covering of one of said blocks and the block itself and having' its opposite end entered through the covering of and into the opposite block and a nut on said lholt disposed in the space between said blocks for drawing said blocks towards each other to tighten the band.
2. A combination reent'orceinent and 'fastener for 'the Cover of a shipping` case,
the-Walls of the shipping case, a pair of bearing blocks adapted normally to rest on the oover in spaced relation to each other7 andfto Whichthe ends of the strip are fastened, Coverings for said blocks, a holt having its head lodged between the covering for one of said hlooksand the block itself and having its opposite end entered through the 'Covering of and into the opposite block, and
a nut on saidholt for drawing said blocks towards each other to tighten thel clamping strip. Y
In testimony whereof I affix' my signature in presence of two Witnesses. f p
