Description
@anni @twine R. WHITE, MECHANICSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
.Letters Patent No. 91,188', dated June 8, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' LOCK-NUT.
Thwcheule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. NVHLTE, of Mechanicsburg, in the countyv of Cumberland, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and do hereby ldeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction' of a cheap and simple'device for securing nuts in their places, so as to prevent their being unscrevcd, whereby the bolts which they hold are looseue Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention.
Figure 2 is a section view of the same.
Letter A represents a piece of boal, or any material, through which there is a number of bolts passlng.
Upouthe end of `eaclx of these bolts C there is screwed a nut, B, so as to hold them firmly in place.
Sometimes, by constant jolting, shaking, or other` causes, these nuts become loosened, and' then the bolts are liable to either drop out or become unsafe.
' In order to prevent this, I place a cap, or safe, I), over the tops of these nuts, which may either be large enough to cover a single one, or two or more, as the case may require, as seen in fig. 1.
These safes consist of thin metal frames, just large enough to tit snugly over the nuts, and when the bolts are passing through wood, they have small, sharp projections formed upon their lower edges, so that they can be pressed into the surface of the wood, so as to hold more securely. When, however, they rest upon a metal surface, the safe is made long enough to cxteud over two or more nuts at once, or a tool can be used to make vthe necessary indentations to receive the projections.
[n order to prevent these safes from coming ofi", a small hole is made through the sides, and a small groove cut in the side of the uut, corresponding to the holes in the safe.
A pin, E, consisting of a small piece of wire, is then passed through both holes and groove, 'and then s the ends are bent over, so as to prevent it from conling out, thus securely holding the two together.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The single or double cap D, placed over a nut or nuts, upon the end of a bolt, substantially as shown and described.
2.. The groove-cut-iu the side of the nut B, in the manner and for the purpose. speciied.
3. The pin E, whenv used to lock the safe D and grooved nut B together, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the grooved nut B, bolt O, safe D, and pin E, .when all are used in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 30th day of April, 1869.
It. WHITE.
