BACCHUS PERRY AND AARON CORNISH, OF LEE, NEW YORK.
' Letters Patent No. 64,904, dated May 21, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLT-HOLDER.
Y (the fitlgetnle t'tftttth in in 11852 flatten; 33mm and making gnrt of its nnnc.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, BAGOHUS PERRY and AARON CORNISH, of Lee, in the county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Bolt-Holder or Wrench; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved bolt-holder or wrench.
Figure 2, an edge view of the same.
Figure 3, an end view, showing its application in the removal of a nut from a bolt.
Like letters in the figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
In the screwing and unscrewing of nuts on bolts, in wood or metal, it has been found diilicult to accomplish it conveniently and readily, particularly when the screw-threads have become rusty or the head of the bolt is round, by reason of the bolt turningin the same direction with the nut. To prevent this, therefore, conveniently and effectually is the object of my invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, I will proceed to describe its construction'and operation.
I have two arms A A joined together, and curved or so formed at their upper ends, (see fig. 1,) as to admit of their taking hold of a piece of wood, metal, or other article properly when applied thereto. The arm A is formed with the branching arms or prongs a a. Near where the arms branch oil, and between them,is securedthe other arm A by the pivot-headed screw 6. The arm A is provided with two or more holes a 0, so that on removing the pivot'screw, and placing the arm with its hole opposite either of the upper or lower holes, and the insertion and fastening of the screw therein, the arms may be adjusted to suit the size or thickness of the plate or other article containing the bolt. At the head of the arm A is a bolt, having at one end a head, d, with four steel points, which points are for the purpose of holding the head of the bolt. The other end of the bolt is so constructed as to operate in a like manner upon the bolt itself or on the head thereof, if small; and sunk in the wood or metal as not to be reached by the head (1. It will thus be seen that by reversing this bolt, either the head of a bolt or a bolt with a small sunken head may be held fast. Attached to the arm A is a hook or link, 0, which hook is intended to fasten into one of the notches f which the other arm is provided with for the purpose of holding the arms when compressed together.
, Operation.
I The prongs a a of the arm A are placed firmly on the wood, metal, or article containing the bolt, (see fig. 3,) with the nut thereof between theprongs. The arm A being underneath the screw-bolt is adjusted until the point of its head dcomes in contact with the head of the bolt y, when it is made fast thereto by compressing the arms together and securing them in the manner herein dcscribcd, so that the hc'adof the bolt is thus prevented from turning, and the nut removed withthe ordinary wrench without that difiiculty heretofore attending the same, caused by the screw becoming rusty or the headbeiug round. By reversing the screw-bolt at the head of the armA, the points of the bolt may be made to hold a bolt, independently of its head, when it is desired to prevent its turning, or when the head of the bolt is small and cannot be conveniently reached by the head cl.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is The bolt-holder, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
