IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-PASTENING.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAnnrs, of Rush Run, in the county of Jeiierson, State of Ohio, have invented a Nut-Fastening; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows the improved nutffastenng, having a key or wrench applied to it.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and eiieientl means of locking nuts upon screws and screw-bolts, so that the nuts shall not casually work loose from 'jar or other causes, and at the same time to provide for a ready removal of' the nuts when required.
The nature oi my invention consists in combining a cam or eccentric with a nut, 1n such manner that whenA the nut is set up tightly upon a male screw, this cam can be made to bind upon the serew-thread, and prevent the nut from unserewing or turning backward, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in th art to understand m'y invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In Athe accompanying drawings, A. represents a screw-bolt, with a nut, B, applied upon it, and D represents the cam or eccentric, by means of which the nut can be locked in place upon the bolt. C is a. wrench or key, which is used for turning the cam D, when it is desired to tighten or loosen the nut. The cam D may be made of the form shown in tig. 2, with a square hole through it for receiving the hooked end of the key C, as shown in iig. 1, so that by means of thiskey said cam can be turned into or out of action, at pleasure. To apply the cam D, a recess is made in the outer face of the nut B, so as to open into the screw-hole, which is through the nut, as shown in gs. 2 and 3, for allowing the edge of the cam to act upon the screw-thread of the bolt A. This recess may be made slightly deeper than the thickness of the cam D, for the purpose of upsetting the metal of the nnt around the edge ot' this recess, and thus permanently attaching the cam to the nut, or the concentric edge of the cam may be slightly bcvelled, so that when the metal of zthe nut is upset or hammered up, the cam will be held in place, but allowed to turn slightly. Other modes may be adopted for attaching the'eam to the nut, but I prefer to have this com seated into a recess made in the nut, with one side exposed, for the reason thatoy this plan a simple key, C, may be inserted into it., for locking and unlocking the nut, when applied upon a screw-bolt.
When a nut which is provided with my improved locking-cam is applied upon a bolt, and screwed to its place, the hooked end of key C is inserted into the square hole in the cam, and the latter turned, so as to bind hard against the screw-thread, and thus lock the nut. When it is desired to remove the nut, the .cam D must be turned back, so as not to touch the screw-thread.
The cams muy be produced by stamping them out of sheet metal of proper thickness, and the recesses in the'nuts for reciving the cams can be produced by a slight addition tothe well-known nut-makiug machine.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A nut, which is provided with a perforated locking-cam, substantially as described.
