CLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dial. 28, 1916.
Application filed August 14, 1911. Serial No. 643,993.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM TIMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lost Nation, in the county. of Clinton'and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Clamping Device, of which the following is a specification.
V This invention relates to improvements in clamping devices, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a clamp adapted to properly support the panels to posts and the like in the construction of hay racks, gates and fences, this particular form of clamping device being provided with a main body portion adapted to pass upon the outside of the panel and provided with a pair of right angled spaced arms adapted to straddle the post or supporting portion to which the panel is to be secured and be held there against by means of clamping plates, the terminals being threaded for the reception of nuts whereby the said clamping plates are actuated to clamp, and the supporting device holds the panel to the post.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a clampin device having a series of terminals whic so grip the panel and post as to prevent the panel turning and at all times retain said panel in a position at right angles to the post to which it is to be secured, and at the same time dispense with the use of nails and bolts in securing the panels in place. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made withinthe scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings+Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamping device in use showing a panel clamped to and supported by a post. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a post which is rectangular in cross section, and B a panel which is of lesser thickness and in this case may represent the panel of a fence, the same being secured to the post by means of the clamping device, which consi'sts of the central bar 1, having the series of four right angled ends 2, 3, Land 5 arranged in pairs at opposite ends thereof and separated .by the curved slots 6 and 7 respectively, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Each one of these respective arms are bent at right angles to meet each other and terminate in the cylindrical bolts or straddling terminals 8, 9, 10 and 11 respectively, their outer free ends being threaded for the reception of the respective clamping plates 12 and 13, and the nuts 14: locking the said plates so as to draw the bar 1 closely upon the outer face of the panel B, the terminals straddling the fence post A while the portion of the said terminals adjacent to the bar 1 contacts the panel B as at a, thereby providing means to prevent any twisting or torsion of the panel B within the clamping device.
By providing each one of the terminals with the peculiar bends at their connections or junctions with the bar 1, it will be seen that the same will properly abut the upper and lower faces of the panel B and at the same time is fast upon and straddles the post A, thus providing a means which will retain the panel securelyagainst the fence post A and at the same time provide a receptacle at the junction of the terminals in the bar 1 which at all times retains the panel B at right angles to the fence post A and thus prevent slipping or torsion of the same thereon which might tend to loosen the clamp or distort the panel.
Although the clamping device has been illustrated as in operation upon a fence post and panel, it is evident that the same may be used wherever it is desired to place trans verse strips in making many forms of racks, for instance hog racks and hay racks, and the construction of gates, this device dispensing with nails and bolts and not splitting orfraying the wood of the posts and panels.
Because the bar 1 is provided within its ends with the notches 6 and 7 which are closed together as shown at 50, a cold chisel may be inserted into the notches 6 and 7, thereby to widen out the space between the arms, and to permit the arms to cooperate with posts of varied widths. This operation also causes the arms to move vertically toward each other, thereby causing the arms to grip the upper and lower edges of the panel.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
The combination with a panel and a post located upon one side of the panel and we the post; separate plates through Whichthe arms of the pairs pass, the plates engaging the rear face of the post; and fastening devices on the arms and engaging the plates; the ends of the bar being provided Wit Vsshaped chisel-receiving notches defined by the arms of the pairs, and the bar being split and closed together at the points of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for notches to permit an adjustment of the spacing of the arms of the pairs, thereby to accommodate posts of different sizes and to secure a binding of the arms upon the opposite edges of the panel. a 20 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two itnesses WILLIAM TIMM.
