COMBINED POST AND TENSION DEVICE FOR WIRE FENCES.
niaaoas.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, jl ll5.
Application filed June 12, 1913. Serial No. 773,227.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLEs D. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scipio, in the county of Jennings and State of Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Posts and Tension Devices for Wire Fences, of
- which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire fences and has for its object to provide a combined corner post and tension device adapted for either portable or stationary fences.
A further object of the invention is to provide a post and tension device which is very simple, cheap and efficient.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of this improvement partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section on line 33 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bolt.
Referring to the drawing A is a corner post for a wire fence, either portable or stationary. The post is formed of members a, a at rightangles to each other, the member a adjacent to its junction with the member a being provided with a plurality of apertures a B is a face plate arranged opposite the member a of the post and provided with a plurality of apertures registering with the apertures a of the said member. The face plate B is spaced from the member a of the post by block 6 and the said plate is secured to the member of the post by bolts Z2 Passing through the several registering apertures of the face plate and member a of the post are bolts C. Each bolt has a polygonal head 0 for the application of a wrench thereto, and is provided between the face plate and member a of the post, with an aperture 0 by means of which a longitudinal wire at of the wire fabric 1) is secured.
The end of the bolt C projecting through the member a of the post is provided with a plurality of apertures 0 to receive the headed locking pin E, which after being passed through the aperture of the bolt rests against the member a of the post and prevents the bolt C from turning.
In use, a bolt C having been passed through the registering apertures of the face plate B and the member a of the post and a Wire (1 attached thereto, a wrench is applied to the head of the bolt C and said bolt turned until the wire is put under the desired tension, when a locking pin is inserted in one of the openings 0 of the bolt and by its contact with the member a of the post, the said bolt is prevented from turning and the wire held under tension. The above op eration is repeated for all the other wires of the fence.
From the above it will be seen that by my invention the wires of a fence can be quickly secured in position and any desired tension given to them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a wire fence, a post having two members at right angles to each other, one of the members adjacent to its junction with the other member, having a plurality of vertically arranged apertures, a face plate secured to and spaced a short distance from the apertured member of the post, said face plate having a plurality of vertically arranged apertures registering with the apertures of the said post member, a plurality of bolts having polygonal heads and passing through the registering apertures of the face plate and post member, each bolt having means, intermediate of its ends between the face plate and apertured post member, for the attachment of a wire thereto, each bolt also having adjacent its other end a plurality of apertures, and pins in the apertures of the bolts and provided with polygonal heads engaging the imperforate member of the post.
CHARLES D. BENNETT.
