Description

M. M. BELOTE LOCK FOR SERVICE COCKS Sept. 11
Filed Jan. 8, 1927 V MMMZdZ awucm foz Patented Sept. 11, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASSIE I. BELOTE, OF VALDOS'I'A, GEORGIA.
LOCK FOR SERVICE COCKS.
Application filed January 8, 1927. Serial No. 159,905.
. means provided for that purpose.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invent-ion resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,
Figure 1 is aside elevation showing the device in position on a cock for locking it closed.
Figure 2 is a section through the device positioned as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation viewed at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line l4, Figure 3. Referring to the figures by characters of reference A dcsi nates a service cock the valve portion of which has a head B adapted to be turned to either'of two positions for the purpose of opening or closing the valve. This head, in the structure illustrated, is flat. The
device constituting the present invention in cludes a casing 1 adapted to be fitted over the head B, this casing being formed integral with four regularly spaced parallel fingers 2 so located relative to each other as to straddle the cock at opposite sides of the valve when the casing 1 is extended either transversely or longitudinally thereof. Openings 3 are provided in the casing adapted to receive the shackle 4 of a padlock which, when in position will extend under the liead as will be apparent by referring to Figure 4. V
Whenthe valve is closed andv the head B is extended transversely. the locking device is positioned with the headl extending transversely of the valve so that two of the fingers 2 will rest at one side of the cockwhile the other two will rest at the otherside. Thus the.
casing 1 will be held against rotation and the head B, being confined within the casing will also be held against rotation. By then placing a padlock 4 in position as shown, the casing will be secured against withdrawalfrom the head B and, therefore, the said head can not be turned to open position until after the padlock has been removed. Should the head 13 be extended longitudinally of the cock with the valve open, the casing is also placed longitudinally and then positioned on the head so that the fingers 2 will straddle the cockand hold the head against rotation. The padlock can then be placed in position whereupon the valve will be held against rotation.
Importance is attached to the fact that this attachment can be brought to either of two positions astride the cock for the purposeot".
holding the valve either in open or in closed position.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. The combination with a housing adapted to receive the head of a valve to hold said head against rotation within the housing, of means extending from the housing for straddling the casing of the valve when said housing is in either of two positions at right angles to .each other, thereby to hold the head of the valve engaged by the housing and prevent ro- .tation thereof.
2. The combination with a housing adapted to receive the head of a valve andhold said head against rotation within the housing, of lingers extending from the corner portions of the housing, all of the fingers being regularly spaced thereby to straddle the casing of the valve when said housing is in either of two positions at right angles to each other.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature,
' MASSIE nis'nnorn.
