THOMAS J'. BOND, OF GADSDEN, ALABAMA.
HOOK.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residin at Gadsden, in the county of Etowah and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a safety hook, wherein use is made of a locking element associated with the hook for rotary and sliding movement and designed to be effectively held in an active position,
necessitating the rotation of the locking element before it can be moved toits active or inactive positions.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hook constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4. is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the retaining plate and latch element removed.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the locking element.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the latch.
Fig.7 is a detail view of the retaining plate.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a hook of the wellknown construction and design, except that the shank of the hook is provided with a raised portion 11 having a longitudinal bore or passage 12 which receives the locking element illustrated in Fig. 5. The bill of the hook is provided with a recess 14: which receives the adjacent end of the locking element when the latter is in an active position. The thickened portion 11 of the hook is recessed as at 15, and the bottom wall of this recess is inclined as at 16 in the direction of the bill of the hook, the bore above referred to opening into the recess so as to expose the locking element 13 as illustrated in Fig. 4E.
The locking element 13 is notched as at 17,

with the cross piece 18 screwed or otherwisesuitably secured to the enlargement 11, while the stem 19 of the latch element is arranged upon the inclined bottom of the recess, and of sufficient length to engage the notch 17 of the locking element, to prevent the latter from being moved longitudinally through the enlargement 11 away from the bill of the hook, until the locking element has been first rotated to move the notch 17 away from the latch element. The recess in the enlargement is closed by a plate 20 which is provided with a flange 21 engaging the shoulders 22 formed by the opposed walls of the recess, and against which shoulders the head of the latch element also bears. The plate 20 is secured in position by means of suitable fastening elements 22.
In practice, the locking element 13, which is formed with an enlarged extremity 13 is arranged within the bore of the enlarged portion 11 of the hook, for both sliding and rotary movement. When it is desired to arrange the locking element in an active position, it is moved in a direction of the bill of the hook until it contacts the latter, this movement of the locking element positioning the notch 17 adjacent the end wall of the recess, and in a position where it receives the adjacent end of the latch element. The locking element however, must be rotated to present the notch to the latch element. When it is desired to move the locking element to an inactive position, or in other words to open the hook, the locking element must be rotated to position the notch 17 wholly within the bore, after which the locking element may be retracted. The locking element '13 is provided with an annular shoulder 13 at an appropriate point in its length, and which shoulder is adapted to come in contact with the adjacent end of the latch element when the locking element is retracted, thereby limiting the movement of the locking element in this direction and preventing casual separation from the shank of the hook.
While it is believed that from the fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be re- 5 sorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a hook including a shank, said shank having a longitudinal bore, a locking element arranged within the bore for both sliding and rotary movement, said shank havlng a recess with an 1nclined bottom, a latch element arranged within said recess, said bottom intersecting said bore whereby a portion of the latch element is exposed within the recess and adapted to engage the locking element to hold the latter in an active position, and said looking element being designed to engage the latch element when retracted to limit the movement of the element in this direction.
2. In combination, a hook including a shank, an enlarged portion formed on said shank and having a longitudinal bore, a
locking element arranged within the bore for both sliding and rotary movement, said looking element being formed with a notch, said enlarged portion of the shank having a recess including an inclined bottom intersecting said bore, whereby said notch may be arranged Within the recess by rotating the locking element, a latch reposing upon the inclined bottom of the recess and adapted to engage said notch to hold the locking element in active position, and means for limiting the movement of the latch element when ment having a notch spaced from said shoulders and adapted to be arranged within sald recess, a latch element reposing upon the inclined bottom of said recess and adapted to engage said notch-to hold the locking element in an active position, and to engage said shoulder to limit the movement of the locking element when the latter is retracted, and a plate closing said recess.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
