FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4., 1919.
Application filed July 28, 1919. Serial No. 313,917.
- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT EKLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fastening devices and has relation more particularly to a device of thisgeneral character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a shoe lace, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved fastener of this type comprising separable parts which may be effectively maintained assembled and whereby the assembled sections may be anchored to a shoe.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastening device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In-order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the upper portion of a shoe upper with a fastening device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through my improved device as herein embodied and in applied position.
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one of the members comprised in my improved device as herein embodied.
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a second member comprised in my improved device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a shoe upper with which coacts a lace L preferably of a type as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,303,869, dated May 20, 1919.
My improved fastener F is adapted to coact with the free end portion of the lace 2 :so that a space or slot 4 is provided fora purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referredto. The plate 1 is also provided substantially centrally thereof with an opening 6 through which extends an eyelet 7 The eyelet7 is also adapted to be directed through the shoe upper A so that the plate 1 may be effectively clamped to said upper. The plate 1 is also preferably positioned adjacent the upper margin of the upper A inwardly thereof so that the extension 2 will overlie the upper edge of the upper A.
The second member of my improved fastener comprises a flat spring plate 8 provided at its upper end portion with an inwardly directed extension 9 adapted to be inserted between the extension 2 of the plate 1 and the wings 3. The outer or free end of the extension 9 is provided with an inwardly directed lip or flange 10 adapted to seat within the space or slot 4 whereby the two sections of the fastener are effectively maintained in assembled relation.
The flat spring plate 8 overlies the outer surface of the upper A and is provided with an opening 11 substantially in register with the eyelet 7. The plate 8 is also of such longitudinal curvature as to have its free or lower end portion bearing against the upper A but with its extremity outwardly directed to facilitate the L therebeneath.
After the lace L has been applied to the shoe upper A the free end portion of the lace is directed through the eyelet 7 and the opening 11 and then the lace is forced between the plate 8 so that the lace L, or more particularly the upper or free end portion thereof, is effectively held against dis placement.
From the foregoing description, it 1s thought to be obvious that a fastening device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use passage of the lace -I do not wish to be understood. as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formatlon of the several parts herein shown in carrymg out my 1nvent1on in practice except as hereinafter claimed. v
I claim:
7 l. A fastener for a shoe lace comprising a plate adapted to overlie the inner face of a shoe upper, said plate being provided with an extension adapted to bridge the upper edge of the upper, said extension being provided at its opposite sides with inwardly directed wings underlying said extension, said wings being of a width less than the length of the extension, an eyelet securing said plate to the upper, a second plate overlying the outer face of the upper and provided named plate, the extremity of said second named extension being provided with a lip extending between the first named plate and the wings, said second named plate having an opening substantially in registry with the eyelet.
2. In combination with a shoe upper, a lace fastener comprising a member substantially the form of an inverted U and straddling the upper marginal portion of the shoe upper, an eyelet securing an arm of the U-shaped member to the upper, the second arm of the U-shaped member being provided with an opening substantially in registry with the eyelet.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
. ALBERT EKLUND. WVitnesses:
J. H. GWINN, ILo LEAOH.
