ennrrnnfr BUCKLE,
Application filed November 11, 1924; Serial No. 749,123.
My invention relates to garment bucklesv of the one-piece type, and it consists in certain details of construction to be more full),7 set forth in the following description of its general features and advantages.
Referring to` the accompanying drawings wherein the saine numerals andv letters of reference indicate like parte throughout the several views:
Figure l, represents tlie'blank or operation of buckle construction- Figine 2 is a `view of the completed buckle-f f Figure 3 is a side elevation of the coinplete bucklew Figure 4l is a plan view of the buckle and a section of webbing `showing the initial step of installing or anchoring" the webbing to the buckle- Figure 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the buckle showing the method of anchoring the webbing theretolirst Figure 6 is an enlarged side elevation of the buckle showing a section of webbing anchored with its free end carried beneath the base- Figure 7 is a plan view of the buckle and `webbing shown inFigure 6- Figure 8 is an enlarged central sectional view of the assembled buckle and webbing on line 8-8 of Figure 9- Y Figure 9 is a plan viewof theassenibled buckle and webbing, and broken view of the latter- Figure l() is `an enlarged modified construction of the buckle showing the webbing clamping element located below the base, also a section of webbing secured theretoHW Figure 1l is a plan view lof the buckle showing the webbing clamping element located .in the base and in open position therewith- Figure l2 is an edge view of the top rail of the buckle showing the arms of the head turned back, and
Fig. 13 is a section on line 13e-13 ot F ig. l1. f
The single piece sheet metal blank shown in Figure lis shaped to form a base andhead. The former is divided by the elon gated opening l into the two parts 2 and 3, the part 2 to behereinafter designated as the base, and the latter as the clamp.` The head part of the buckle consists of the opening Llparallel with the opening 1, arms 6,
and the rail 7 from which depend thel teeth. A
After the blank 'shown in Figure 1 4is formed, the teeth 9, on the lower .edge of the clamp 3, are lirst turnedinward at right angles to the clanip and said clamp `is then folded on the line a-o to overlie the'base 2,V
as shown in `F igure 5. Thearins 6 are elevated at an obtuse angle tothe upper surface of the base 2, andthe teeth 5 are car.- ried back and below the arms andthe edgeV of the rail 7 lis alsogiven a downward curve to avoid forming an obstruction to parts of the clothing. i f
lVhen 'the several parts of the buckle are in the position shown in Figure 5, the end ofthe webbing. l() is inserted under the slightlf,T raised clamp 3 and fully seated thereunder, as also shown in Figure fl. The purpose of the elongated opening l is to eX- pose the extreme end of the webbing and thus show that it is fully7 seated under the clamp-3, which clamp is then firmly closedprevents faulty seating of the end of the webbing by careless operatives, as such end must be fully exposed 'to view to -insure proper seating.
`lNhen the end of the webbing` is thus firinly anchored, its free end is iirst` passed through the opening 4c of the head and carried back along` the underside of the base Q, see arrows, Figures 6 and "Lthence, see `liigures 8 and t), returned over the clamp 3, and a second time passed tln-ougl'i the opening l of the head and brought into engagement with the teeth 5. The sharp pointed ends 5 of the teeth project toward the base oit the buckle and at approniinatelyv right angles to their main bod7 for a secure and certain grip on the webbing. vThis is an essential feature in hose supporters for which this particular buckle is specially designed. These curvedteeth absolutely prevent slipping of' the buckle under the usual backing and filling to which it is constantlysubjected, which result could not be obtained werethe teeth not thus curved. s y
In Figure l0 is shown a modified construction of the buckle, wherein the clamp, designated as 3*, occupies a reverse position from that shown in the other views. In this view it will be observed that the clamp overlil() fore mentioned, thatwafter the end of the,y
lies the underside o'l' the base 2. The teeth 9 will also occupy a reversed position as shown. ln other respects, therest el' the buckle construction remains the saine as shown in the other views. There is, however, a slight change in the manner ot threadingl the webbing in this inodiiied con struction. lt will be noted, Figure 8, as be# webbing is anchored, the ifree end is passed txvicelthrough theiopening l ofthe head, while in the modilied construction it only passes once through said` opening. i
ln Figure ll,ithe clamp il is divided by the Ushaped opening 1 2, "and is struck up roin the base 2 `with the teeth 13 termed on its` edge, which teeth are pierced ,a from the openings 'la oi' the base. The head portionV of this buckleconstruction is the same shownin the other views,` and the inanner of threadingthe webbing is the same as shown y1in Figure L8. i The clamp ll is narrower than the opening lo, irom which it is pierced, to avoid shearing the `vvebbing when closing the clamp thereagainst.`
lf desired the arms o `could be turned back as shown in Figure l2, to give amore iinshed appearance to the buckle. y
Having thus described my invention what Ielaimiszj l. A; one piece sheet metal buckle comprising a base and a head disposed at an obtuseY angle to each other, saidbase having integral therewith a webbing clamping member having teeth along its edge and extending at anangle to said base, and said head having an elongated opening bounded by side arms and atop rail, hthe-latter having teeth along its edge and extending at an angle4 to `theV head. i
2, A one piece sheet `metal buckle comprising a. base and head, said base having an elongated opening dividing the base into two parts, one of said parts folded to overlie the other part to form a clamp to anchor the end of a `strip ol' webbing with the end o the webbing exposed in the elongated opening to insure its being fully seated under the clamp, said head having an elongated opening par allel with the base opening forming side arms projecting from the base With a ytop rail integral with the arms and having teeth depending therefrom to engage the webbing, said head elevated above the upper surface of the base and at an obtuse angle thereto With the teeth projecting below the arms.
3. A one piece buckle comprisingalbase and head, the base divided by an elongated opening, said base adapted to be folded on a line with said opening to overlie the reinaininc.r portion of the base for securing the end of webbing thereto, the head having an elongated opening parallel with the former opening and comprising side arme anda top rail having teeth depending therefrom, said head elevated above the upper surface ol' the base andat an obtuse angle thereto with the teeth projecting beloa7 the arms and at an angle thereto. i
