To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l. FRANKLIN R. `WH1TE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven 5 and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in l0 buttons and more particularly to that type or class wherein the head of the button is adapted to flex and swivel with respect to the base and usually referred to as flexible buttons'. It has heretofore been customary in applying flexible buttons to garments or other material to do so by the use of a tack having a single prong which is forcibly driven through the garment material by a button attaching machine and headed against an anvil and within an anchor member.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a button of this character which may be secured to a garment or cloth material by the use of a staple fastener, that is, fastener having two or more prongs, and
to further simplify the construction of the' head of the button so as to eliminate the use of the anchor member and to cause the prongs of the staple fastener to spread and directly engage a portion of the base of the button.
A. further object is to accomplish the aforementioned ends in a simple and expeditious manner and to provide a button havingy all of the desirable characteristics of the usual type of flexible button and at the same time to be susceptible of more economic manufacture, and with the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in the improved button illustrated in the ac companying drawing and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, it being understood that changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
. Figure 1 is a sectional view of a button embodying the characteristic features of my '11 and is held firmly in invention and showing it just prior to its attachment to the garment;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the a body portion 10 across the upper flared" extremity of which extends the top plate 11 and which may be suitably inscribed or decorated, according to the use to whichthe button is to be put. The lowerextremity of the body portion is reduced so as to form the hollowYV hub 12 having the inturned lower edge 13. The base of the button B- isprovided with the bottom plate 141 which is adapted to rest directly against the garment material or cloth D and carries the hollow upstanding shank 15, the upper extremity of which is:` turned so as to form the outstanding ledge 16. The hub 12 of the body portion of the button receives the upstanding shank 15 of the base therein, so that the inwardly turned flange 13 of the hub is held between the bottom plate 14.- and the outstanding ledge of the shank 16, whereby the head of the button is mounted for limited movement or fl'exure with respect to the base.
Located within the body portion of the button is the upsetting die 17, the same comprising the die base 18 and the die head 19, the latter being provided with a central depending portion 20 surrounded by the an. nular or circular groove 21. The base of the die fits between the upwardly extending liange of the body portion and the top plate lace thereby and with the die face 19 con ronting the opening within the shank 15 of the button base.
With the parts as thus arranged, as the prong fastener is forcibly driven through the garment material D it enters and passes up through the hollow shank 15 of the button base and contacts with the side walls'of the groove 2l or the sloping sides of the central depending member 20 whereby the prongs of the staple fastener are spread outwardly and bent or upset directly upon the overturned upper ledge 16 of the button shank yand thus become firmly attached to the base. The base of the button is accord ingly firmly anchored to the cloth or garment material D by two `spaced prongs of the staple fastener,l so that it is capable ot withstanding considerable stresses. The particular conformation ot the die thus renders unnecessary the use ot any additional anvil or anchor member, and, furthermore, causes the base to be held at two spaced points, thus providing a strong` and rigid attachnient for the button, Furthermore, the flexing or swiveling ot the head ot' the button upon the base is not in any way limited by the overturned prongs oit the fastener, as the head will be held firmly down upon the base in the position as illustrated in Figure l during the time that. the staple fastener is being' driven through the garment material and secured to the button base.
Having thus described and explained my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A button of the class described comprising a base for ned with a bottom plate, a hollow upstanding shank carried by said bottom plate, said shank provided at its upper extremity with an outstanding ledge, a button head comprising a hollow hub formed with an inturned lower edge slidably engaging the sha-nk of the base and limited in its movement with respect thereto by said bottom plate and said outstanding ledge, the head ot said button above said hub outwardly iared and including a top plate, a die locatedwithin said head resting against said top plate and comprising a die head extending down through the hollow hub and held in position thereby, said die head provided with a die face having a circular groove with a central projection, said die .tace adapted to receive the prongs of a staple fastener thereagainst and to spread and turn said prongs down directly upon the outstanding ledge ot' the siank of the button base.
