Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BAWSON, 0F BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID MOKEE AND TIMOTHY J. MCOARTHY, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
TIRE-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,363, dated January 27, 1885.
Application led June 7,1884. k(No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RAWsoN, of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a cert-ain new and' useful 'Improvement iu Tire-Tighteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to those tire tighteners or clamps in which are employed a pair of jaws to grasp aspoke; also, to those tighteners or clamps in which a sliding `bar is projected by means of a wedge to push the felly outward.
My invention consists inthe improved and peculiarly-formed clamp' hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section at 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section at 8 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isaperspective View ot' one of the lifting-bolts and wedge.
The clamp consists of two jaws, A and B, each ot' which is made with two recesses, O and C', formed to iit spokes of different sizes, and each of which has two holes or niortises, D, in which tit the lifting-bolts E. The jaw A has guide-ar1ns a upon which slides thejaw B, said jaw being channeled at the ends to tit the guide-arms c. The guide-arms a are slotted longitudinally at c to receive a wedge, F,which bears against the outer side of the jaw B, so as to force it inward against the spoke G. It will be seen that one pair of the 1nortise-holes D is in line with one pairof the recesses C, and the other pair of holes D with the other pair of the recesses C', so that whichever pair of recesses is used there shall be lifting bolts in position to act upon the felly H. The heads e of the lifting-bolts are made to tit the inside ofthe felly. The lifting-bolts are slotted at e to receive wedges I, that bear upon the jaws A and B, and which when driven in lift the bolts and raise the felly upon the spoke pin or tenon g, leaving a space between the felly and shoulder g', into which space is introduced a washer of leather or other substance. The washer is 'cut through at one side to allow it to be passed around the pin or tenon y. As the wedges I are driven backward thefelly is left free to settle down upon the washer and hold it rInly in place. This movement of the felly may be assisted by a blow upon the tire. The liftingbolts have side projections, e2, to bear against the jaw in the absence ofthe Wedge I, and keep the upper end ofthe slot e open for the entrance of the wedge.
I claim as my invention A tire-tightener consisting of a jaw A, formed with a bolt-hole, D, halfspoke recess C, arms a, and wedge-slots in the arms, wedge F, the jaw B, having half-spoke recess O, a bolt-hole, D, and channeled ends to fit the arms, and the bolts E, each bolt being formed t with a head, e, to fit afelly, wedgeslots e', and
wedges I, as set forth.
