, JOHN MORSE PARSONS AND WILLIAM HARVY PARSONS, OF GREAT WESTERN MINE, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,260, dated November 9, 1886.
I Application filed March 29, 1886. Serial No. 197,068. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN MoRsE PAR- sons and WILLIAM HARVY PARSONS, of Great Vestern Mine, in the county of Sonomaand State of California, have invented a new and Improved \Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
Our invention relates to the construction of a wrench designed to hold anut or burr to its place against the outer end of the hub during and after the removal of the wheel from the axle at the time when the axle is being lubricated; and the invention consists of a leverarm carrying jaws arranged to engage with the nut and provided with arms carrying clamps arranged to be brought into engagement with the spokes of the wheel, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating our improved wrench as it appears when in position for use, the hub of the wheel being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an outer face view of the wrench. one of the clamps being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the clamps, representi ng the sameas removed from the wrench.
The wrench illustrated in the drawings consists of a main bar or lever, A, formed with handles a a. Just at one side of the center of the bar A there is arranged a jaw, B, which is held in place by a key, I). In connection with the jaw B, there is arranged an adj ustable jaw, O, that is socketed to receive the lever A. The position of the jaw O is controlled by a plate, D, formed with a recess, d, in which the outer cross-arm, e, of the jaw O rests, and with a longitudinal slot, f, through which there is passed abolt, 9, that is engaged by a winged nut, h. The lever A carries two projecting arms, F F, said arms being rigidly secured to the lever-arm at a point near the handles a a. The upper faces of these arms F-that is, the faces adjacent to the lever A, are recessed at Z, and in the recesses so formed there are mounted clamping-hooks G, which pass beneath the lever, and also beneath retaining-straps it. One edge of each of the hooks G is formed with ratchet-teeth'i, ar-
are brought into engagement with opposite spokes, H H, and the lever A is advanced toward the hub until the nut K enters the spacebetween the jaws B O, in which position the wrench will be held,owing to the engagement of the springcatches I with the ratchet-teeth i. Thejaw O is then advanced, so that the nut will be clamped between the jaws, and the said jawis then looked in position by turning home the thumb-nut h. After the parts have been adjusted, as described, the nut K may be removed from the axle N by simply turning the lever and wheel, and in being so removed the nut will be held in its normal position against the outer end of the hu b, thus preventing it from coming in contact with the dirt or grit and enabling the operator to quickly return the nut to position after the lubricant has been applied to the axle.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination of a handle-lever, jaws on saidlever, means for adjusting the jaws on the lever, arms projecting from the said lever near its ends, sliding hooks on the said arms, and catches for locking the sliding hooks on the arms, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a wrench, the combination. with a lever-arm, of jaws, one of which is adjustable, extending arms F F, formed with recesses l, hooks G, mounted in said recesses and provided with ratchet-teeth i, and aspring-catch, I, carried by the lever-arm and arranged to engage with said ratchet-teeth, substantially as described. I
3. In a'wrench, the combination, with a lever-arm, of ajaw, B, keyed thereto, ajaw, 0. arranged .in connection with an adjustable plate, D, a bolt, 9, and a winged nut, h, arms F F, hooks G, provided with ratchet-teeth i, and a spring-catch, I, substantially as described. I
