VVILLIAM F. MILLER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,330, dated January 8, 1895. Appnmion nai May 28.1894. santini. 512,764. (No man.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. MILLER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination device to be applied to trunks for the purpose of furnishing a firm and convenient casing for attaching the hinge pieces, the object being to strengthen the hinge connections and to facilitate the work of attaching the hinges. This object I attain by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing one corner of a trunk with my improvement attached, the trunk being represented as closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one corner of a trunk as it appears when open. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the interior of the casing with the hinge connections.
In the drawings, A andB represent respectively the cover and the body of a trunk of ordinary construction. The casing for the corner of the cover is represented by the part C C C2 C8 all of a single piece of metal, and
D D D2' represents the casing for the corner of the body of the trunk. These casing pieces are to be made substantially as represented in the drawings.
H represents a curved linkpivoted to the part C C C2 C3 by the pin Il and to the part D D D2 by the pin H2. A second link K is pivoted to the same parts at K and K2. The
corner casings andthe links H and K are not new nor of my invention, but it is necessary that their construction and use be understood in order to comprehend my improvements,
which I will now describe.
The link K is made with a slot K3 so that it may move in the direction of its length on the pin K2. (See Fig. 3.) I have found by trial that a trunk with two links like H and K will not readily open unless one of the links has a slot like K2 to allow of motion on the pivot. I have also found by trial that a cover connected to the body of a trunk by links at each end like H and K will not keep in its proper place in opening; that is, the longitudinal lines of the cover will not remain parallel to the corresponding lines of the body of the trunk. To obviate this defect,-I add to the upper casing the members C2 and to the lower casings, the members D2, and connect them by hinge pieces E. With these additions to the casingsl produce a perfect working device.
I claimf In a trunk hinge device, the combination of the casing pieces made as described, the curved link H pivoted at I-I to the cover of the trunk and at H2 to the body of the trunk, the link K pivoted to the cover of the trunk and connected by aV slot and pin to the body of the trunk; with the hinge C2 E D2, the members C2 and D2 being respectively integral with the casing pieces, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myy name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 11th dayu of May, A. D. 1894.
