S. R. PAYNE.
BEDSTEAD BRAGE. I No. 531,641. Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
warns L ATENT t niest BEDSTEAD-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 531,641, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed June 21, 1 894. Serial No. 515,269. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Ron PAYNE; a citizen of the United States, residing at Riddleton, in'the county of Smith, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
This invention relates generally to beds and particularly to an improved means for bracing or staying the frame thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a device that shall be cheap and simple, easily applied and quickly operated.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of'the several parts and their novel combination or arrangement, all of which will be clearly set forth in the description and pointed out in the claim. I
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a bottom plan View. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the casting, and twisting device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the casting. Fig. 4 is a de tail view of the twisting shaft.
In the drawings I have shown an ordinary bedstead comprising the head and foot boards and side rails, said head and foot boards being provided with the usual legs or end posts. A hook or pin A is secured in each end post and adjacent thereto are the staples B B driven into the side rails as shown. The brace wires 0 O are attached to the hooks or pins A passed through the staples B B and extend diagonally across, the bed frame crossing each other at the center.
At the center of the frame and resting under the stay wires upon hooks, wires or slats is the casting piece D which has a peripheral flange d and a central web or plate d thus providing the upper and lower recesses d and d Radial slits E E are produced in the upper edges of the peripheral flange said slits being provided to receive the wires 0 C and thus prevent the casting turning thereon when I so formed with a series of ratchet teeth F. and in the center of the web or central plate is an aperture G having enlargement g at each side thereof.
For the purpose of tightening the wires I employ a winding shaft I-I having diagonal slits h to receive the Wires when they cross each other at the center. This shaft H is made rigid with a circular disk I which rests in the lower recess while the shaft passes through the central opening G said shaft being provided with lateral studs h which pass through the enlargement g and rest on top the central plate or Web thus securing the shaft and its disk within the central casting and holding a lever K attached to the disk in contact with the ratchet teeth under the peripheral flange.
In operation the parts are assembledas shown and described and to tighten the brace wires the hand lever is moved around in the direction of the arrow twisting the wires when they meet. so that the ends and sides are bound tightly together. The lever as it is moved around is securely held by the ratchet teeth and on account of the central plate or web and the lateral studs this lever is always in engagement with said teeth and the wires can be tightened, step by step as needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the end and foot boards and side rails of a bedstead, of the end posts thereto, the hooks A, secured in said end post, the staples B, attached to the side rails near the end post, the brace wire G, fastened at each end to the hooks A, passing through the staples B, crossing each other at the center, the casting piece D, having a peripheral flange d, and a central web d pro viding upper and lower recesses d ,'and 01 the upper edges of the peripheral flange being slitted as at E, and the lower edges being ratcheted as shown at F, the central web having an aperture G, with enlargement g, at each side thereof, and winding shaft H, passing through said opening andprovided at its upper end with diagonal slits h, to receive the wires when they cross each other at the center after being passed through the slits E the In testimony whereef I affix my signature in lateral studs h carried by the shaft H, the presence of two Witnesses.
disk I, attached to the lower end of the shaft T and adapted to rest; in the lower recess d SAMUEL ROE LAXNE' 5 and the hand lever K, attached to said disks \Vitnesses:
I, and adapted to engage with the ratchet II. M. IIALE,
teeth F, substantially as shown and described. JULIAN FISHER.
