S. R. PAYNE. BBD BRAGB.
No. 595,201. Patented Deo. 7, 1897.I
M417] man ATTH/VEYS.
UNIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL ROE PAYNE, OF RIDDLETON, TENNESSEE.
BED-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,201, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed September 19,1896. Serial No. 606,433. (No model.)
To @ZZ w'tom t nutty concern,.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ROE PAYNE, of Riddleton, in the county of Smith and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improved Bed-Brace, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention relates to a device for tightening the braces used in connection with bedsteads, doc.
With this object in view the invention consists of the details of construction and arrangement, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in operating position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the tension device. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the saine. Fig. 4c is a reverse plan view.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a bedstead of the ordinary construction, coinprising the head and foot and side rails. A staple or hook is secured in each end post, and adjacent thereto are the staples C, driven into the side rails. The brace-wires D D are attached to the hooks or pins B and pass through the staples C and extend diagonally across the bed-frame, crossing each other at the center, all of which is constructed in accordance with my Patent No. 531,641, granted January l, 1895.
E represents a casting-piece centrally apertured at d and provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth Z9 and downwardlyprojecting guide-lugs c.
A circular disk E, having the lever-handle f attached thereto and having the hub g projecting downwardly therefrom, is provided for tightening the brace-wires D D, the said disk being placed into the casting-piece E and the hub g projecting down through the aperture o. Projecting downwardly from the hub g are pins t' for engaging with the said brace-wires. A pawl j is provided to engage with the peripheral ratchet-teeth h to prevent slipping of the tension device when turned. The said pawl Works in the guideways 7c, situated on the under side of the lever-handle, and has the spiral spring m-for keeping the said pawl in engagement. The said tension device is placed under the said stay-Wires at their point of crossing, passing at right angles through the pins t' and under the said guide lugs, as shown. Vhen it is desired to tighten the bracewires, the hand-lever is moved around in the direction indicated by the arrow. The lever as it moves around is held by the pawl fitting into the ratchet-teeth and so the wires can be made taut.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the end and foot boards and the side rails of a bedstead, of the end posts thereto, the hooks B B secured in said end posts, the staples C C fixed to said side rails near said end posts, the crossed brace-wires D D, detachably secured to said hooks and staples, the casting-piece E, provided with a central bearing-orifice a, circumferential ratchet teeth b, and lateral guide-lugs c, the disk F provided with the integral lever-handle f, the concentric hub g, provided with the lateral pins t' and a springactuated pawl mounted in said handle and adapted to engage the teeth on the castingpiece E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL ROE PAYNE. Vitnesses:
PALE BEARLEY, W. J. HAZZARD.
