BED BEACH. Patented'oct. 6, 18-91.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. ORITOHER, OF BOLIVAR, MISSOURI, AND EDYVARD B. VEBBER, OF COLLIERVILLE, TENNESSEE.
BED-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,563, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed November 28, 1890. Serial No. 372,865. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN M. ORITOHER, of Bolivar, Polk county, Missouri, and ED- WARD B. WEBBER, of Collierville, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Bed-Brace, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bedsteads, and is to more particularly designed as a means for holding the frame of the bedstead in proper shape and preventing the side and end bars thereof from becoming disconnected.
The invention consists of a bedstead having a brace constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of our improved bedstead. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective detail of the wire-stretcher.
Referring to the said drawings, letter B designates a bedstead-frame of any approved size and construction. Screw-eyes I are seated in the inner faces of the head, foot, and side boards of the bed-frame, which screw-eyes are slightly open on their upper side, as seen at 0. Wire loops W pass through the two eyes in the end board and the two eyes at the coro responding ends of the side boards at each end of the bed-frame, the ends of the wire of each loop being preferably connected between the two eyes in the end board and the loops extending nearly to each other beneath the center of the bed. Where the sides of the two loops approach each other a wire-tightener is inserted, by means of which the loops are drawn toward each other'and all the members of the bed-frame are drawn inwardly.
As these members are connected to the corner-posts P of the bed, when they are drawn inwardly and held in this position the bedframe will be kept intact, as will be readily understood.
5 The wire-tightener we employis preferably of the following construction: AAare two arms pivotall y connected at one end, as at E, and L is a loop linked to the free end of one arm and adapted to engage teeth T of the outer face of the other arm. Near the pivot the arms are provided with inwardly-curved hooks H. Then this device is brought into position, the hooks engage the inner ends of the wire loops W, the free ends of the arms A are forced toward each other, and the link L is engaged with the proper tooth T to hold the arms in the position to which theyhave been brought to give the desired tension to the wire loops.
WVhen the bed-frame shrinks orrattles, the tightening device is operated to exert a greater tension on the wire loops, whereby the members of the bed-frame are drawn straight inward and more tightly locked together.
The wire loops WV can be removed when the tightener is loosened by lifting them out of the openings 0 in the screw-eyes.
The whole device normally stands beneath the bed-slats or beneath the spring-bed, if one be used, and may be operated either from the upper or lower side, as preferred.
That is claimed as new is 1. The combination, with the bed-frame B and the screw-eyes I in the end and side bars of the same and wire loops W at each end of the frame, embracing the eyes in the end and in each side bar, of a wire-tightening device comprising arms A, pivotally connectedat one end and having inwardly-opening hooks H near their pivot, teeth T on the outer face of one arm, and a loop L, linked to the free end of the other arm and engaging said teeth, as set forth.
2. The hereindescribed wire-tightener, the same comprising arms A, pivotally connected at one end and having inwardlyopening hooks H near their pivot, teeth T on the outer face of one arm, and a. loop L, linked to the free end of the other arm and engaging said teeth, as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
