SILO-ANCHOR.
Application filed July 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Silo-Anchors; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to anchoring devices for silos, and particularly for wooden silos to a concrete foundation, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a front view of the invention as applied, the silo being shown as broken away; Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fi 1, of a modification.
In these drawings the numeral 2 designates a silo composed mainly of staves 3, 3; at is the concrete foundation, and 5 the hoops surrounding the silo.
6 is the anchoring device, composed of two upwardly converging or obliquely arranged metal straps or branches 7, 7, meet ing each other at an angle and forming the two sides of an isosceles triangle, of which the foundation a is the base, each strap being perforated at intervals at 8, 8, for passage of securing screws 9, 9, engaging successive staves, about ten staves being usually engaged by the securing screws of the two straps. Each strap is provided with a horizontally bent lower end 10, in contact with the horizontal top surface of the foundation and provided with a perforation 11 for passage of a securing bolt 12, said bolt having a horizontally offset lower end or head 13, and being set in the foundation before the straps are attached thereto. The uppermost or middle securing screw 9 engages alined perforations of both straps, one of the straps being offset at its upper end at 14, to overlap the upper end of the other strap. The straps are bent into arcuate form, concentric with the silo wall, with which they have close contact.
The anchoring device described and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Serial No. 41,950.
shown is of simple nature, and yet strong and effective for the purpose, the straps being practically unitary with the staves, with a number of which they have connection by the securing screws, and the horizontally bent lower ends of the straps, bearing against the foundation, to which they are strongly connected by the base bolts, to prevent any rocking or displacement of the silo with relation to its foundation. A suitable number of the anchors may be employed for each silo.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings a modification of the invention is shown, wherein the straps converge downwardly instead of upwardly, and wherein a single base bolt 12 is used, engaging alined perforations 11 of the horizontally bent lower ends 10 of the straps. In this modification the same reference characters are employed as in the principal form of the invention, differentiated by the exponent l.
The anchor being preferably of the general form of an inverted V, has the advantage of a double or extended bearing at its lower ends, being the parts subjected to the greatest strain, against the foundation.
I claim: I
l. The combination with a silo having wooden staves and a concrete foundation, of a V-form anchor having oblique converging intersecting arcuate branches concentric with the silo wall, terminating substantially at their intersection and provided with perforations at intervals, securing means for engaging said perforations and connecting the branches with said staves, and base locking means set in said foundation and engaging the lower ends of said branches.
2. The combination with a silo having wooden staves and a concrete foundation, of an inverted V-form anchor having oblique upwardly converging intersecting arcuate branches concentric with the silo wall, terminating substantially at their intersection and provided with perforations at intervals, securing means engaging said perforations, connecting said branches with said staves and connecting the branches together, and base locking bolts engaging the lower ends of said branches and having horizontally offset lower ends set in said foundation.
3. The combination with a silo having wooden staves and a concrete foundation, of a V.-form anchor consisting of converging intersecting arcuate metal straps concentric With the silo wall and terminating substantially at their intersection, said straps having perforations at intervals and horizontally bent lower ends bearing against the top of said foundation, securing means engaging said perforations, connecting the straps with said staves and connecting said straps together, and base locking means engaging said lower ends of the straps and set in said foundation.
4. The combination with a silo having wooden staves and a concrete foundation, of an inverted V-form anchor consisting of upwardly converging intersecting arcuate metal straps concentric with the silo wall,
terminating substantially at their intersection, said straps having perforations at intervals and horizontally bent lower ends bearing against the top of said foundation,
and having horizontally offset lower ends 25 set in said foundation.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
